Born: Died: Age Enshrined on August 13, 1985 Robert W. Smith is a former ATA president who, at the time of his induction, had volunteered 33 years of service to the association at both the state and national levels. He was completing his eighth year as ATA treasurer when enshrined. His service to trapshooting started shortly after he began registering targets in 1948. He attended his first of 36 consecutive Grand Americans in 1950. Just two years later he was elected ATA Eastern Zone vice president, succeeding to the presidency in August, 1956. During his tenure as ATA president, he secured a new long-term lease of the ATA shooting grounds from Dayton officials at a time the city of Dayton needed more land itself, in order to expand its airport. The lease helped insure that future Grand Americans would be held on the site of the association’s headquarters, as they had been since 1924. Smith was instrumental in guaranteeing the continuation of an official ATA publication after the Sportsmen's Review changed ownership and the new Trap and Field evolved. Also during his presidency the first scoreboard building was constructed on the Grand grounds. He was one of the first to work with the National Rifle Association in restoring the participation of the United States in Olympic trapshooting competition.

Biographical Sketch
I grew up in the small silver-mining town of Cobalt, Ontario. Forests and lakes were abundant, so most young fellows were avid hunters and fishermen. I was no exception and I spent countless hours in “the bush” with my Dad. At the same time I had a strong desire to work with my hands, building plastic models of all kinds AND drawing. During my teenage years I was introduced to the beauty of nature in art by seeing the artistic talent of Glen Loates (in the Canadian Magazine). I started to draw more earnestly then ... but having no access to art classes, I was “on my own” in developing my skills. I went off to College and acquired a Business Administration Diploma and left my art behind for several years. I dabbled in it from time to time but never focussed upon it until my late thirties. It was then that I acquired a great fondness for the medium of charcoal. This suited my visual handicaps (near-sightedness, stigmatism, red-green colour deficiency and persistent “floaters” in my field of vision). I proceeded to develop the technique of “brushed charcoal” and subsequently patented it. After much coaxing from a well-established artist, I decided to attempt the sensitive medium of watercolour ... and once more, I learned by studying the work of others rather than by immersing myself in art classes. Glen Loates and Fenwick Lansdowne were my main sources of study.
