Thorpe preceded Deion, Bo
By Ron Flatter
Special to ESPN.com
"[Jim] Thorpe was early 20th century when sportswriting was mythologizing, so it becomes hard to tell what's real and what's myth. He's kind of half a modern sports figure, and half a kind of Paul Bunyan, American mythic figure. The appeal is the idea of the kind of frontier, superhuman, natural man," says author Nick Lemann on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Jim Thorpe won the decathlon and pentathlon in the 1912 Olympics. Didn't we hear about Jim Thorpe from our dad or granddad? We certainly never saw him in person. But we sure knew the legend. He was the Olympic track champion who lost his gold medals because he played minor league baseball. Long before Bo and Deion, he was the athlete who played pro baseball and football at the same time. He was voted "The Greatest Athlete of the First Half of the Century" by the Associated Press and became a charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But Thorpe's legend was galvanized into America's conscience at the 1912 Olympics, when he won the decathlon and pentathlon in Stockholm. At the awards ceremony, King Gustav V of Sweden congratulated him: "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world."

Thorpe, Jim Thorpe, Jim (c. 1888-1953), American athlete, one of the greatest all-round athletes of the 20th century. He was born near Prague, Indian Territory (now in Oklahoma), and educated at Haskell Institute, in Lawrence, Kansas, and at Carlisle Indian School. His full name was James Francis Thorpe, but his original Native American name was Wa-tho-huck (“Bright Path”); his parents were of Sauk and Fox ancestry. In 1907, his first year at Carlisle, young Thorpe displayed remarkable prowess in American football and athletics and won the attention of Pop Warner, then Carlisle's coach of these sports. Thorpe performed brilliantly for the varsity football team, but in 1909 he withdrew from the school and went to North Carolina. There he worked as a farmhand and played semi-professional baseball. Returning to Carlisle in 1911, Thorpe played half-back for the football team, contributing largely to Carlisle victories over some of the most powerful teams in the country. In 1911 and 1912 he made the All-American team. Thorpe excelled during this period in many other sports, including athletics, baseball, lacrosse, basketball, ice hockey, swimming, boxing, tennis, and archery.

New York Picked as Summer Olympics Candidate
By REUTERS
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., — The U.S. Olympic Committee Saturday chose New York City over San Francisco as its candidate to host the 2012 Summer Olympics.
The decision was made after both cities put on presentations, with New York's delegation including former Mayor Rudi Giuliani making the case for the city still reeling from the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
The next step will be to persuade the International Olympics Committee in Switzerland to pick New York over such other candidates as Paris and London when the host city is chosen in 2005. 11-02-02, 06:55 PM http://espn.go.com/oly/news/2002/1102/1454873.html

BIOGRAPHY
Describing Jim Thorpe as a great athlete would be doing him a severe injustice. A better description would be calling him the greatest athlete of the 20th Century. This label will probably be debated by many, but Jim Thorpe's accomplishments speak louder than words. King Gustav V of Sweden told Jim Thorpe: "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world."
James Francis Thorpe was born on May 28, 1887 in a one-room cabin in Oklahoma. Although there is much confusion on Jim Thorpe's date of birth, this is the date according to his estate. His very existence was an excellent representation of the melting pot that was America. Jim Thorpe had some French and Irish blood but he was of mostly Sac and Fox Indian heritage. His Indian name, Wa-Tho-Huk, translated to "Bright Path", something that Jim Thorpe definitely had ahead of him. Full Biography
