Unitas is considered by many to have been one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. He was the National Football League's most valuable player in 1957, 1959 and 1964.
After his college career at the University of Louisville, Unitas was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL, but was released before the season began. In 1956 Unitas joined the Baltimore Colts NFL team. The Colts won the NFL championship under his leadership in 1958, by defeating the New York Giants in sudden death overtime. It was the first overtime game in NFL history, and is often referred to as the "greatest game ever played". The game has been credited for sparking the rise in popularity of football during the 1960s. Unitas then led the Colts to a repeat championship in 1959. Later in his career, although he was injured through most of the 1968 season, he came off the bench to play in the Super Bowl III, which the Colts lost. Unitas was also injured during the Super Bowl V, but he did throw a key touchdown pass in the game that helped lift the team to victory.
Johnny Unitas was traded to the San Diego Chargers in 1972, and retired from football in 1974. He was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979.

February-5th-2007, 05:12 PM After yesterday's game does Manning now rank as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time? We know he has some gawdy numbers and probably will break every record there is but will that even be enough to put him ahead of Montana? Elway? Untias? Brady? Graham? Where does he rank amongst the greats? Does he have to win a couple of more? To me championships don't define you completely but they are a large part of it in my book. Just curious as to everyones opinion as to who there top 5 quarterbacks of all time. I hate to leave Sonny off this list but no championships to his credit much less a winning season I have to exclude him. I know he played for some terrible teams so don't rip me for excluding him..
My top 5 are -
1. Joe Montana
2. John Elway
3. Johnny Unitas
4. Tom Brady
5. Otto Graham - 10 straight championship games...couldn't exclude him! OWUeagleMD February-5th-2007, 05:19 PM

A patch should be worn by both the Colts and Ravens, if not the entire NFL. 11 Sep 2002, 09:32 PM Johnny U was not only great on the field - but great off it as well. He was funny and never felt hurried to scurry off from a fan that wanted to talk football. I talked to him numerous times before Ravens games and he was always pleasent although I knew he had other things he would rather be doing.
The Ravens have to put his name and number up in the stadium - he has done far more for the Ravens than Ernest Byner. Not only that - a huge statue should be constructed a la Babe Ruth's statue outside of Camden Yards.
Hell, as far as I am concerned the stadium should be Johnny U Stadium.
