If Ted Williams was the mind of baseball during this era, Yogi Berra was the soul. Mantle was good, the pitching was good, Stengel knew how to write out the lineup card. But Yogi was the driving force behind the Yankee success. Yogi Berra, 2nd of the best 25 baseball players, 1946-1965 rated 12 months ago

Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Yogi Berra Biography Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra (born May 12, 1925) is a retired baseball player and, later, team manager. Born on the Hill in St. Louis, Berra was originally nicknamed Lawdie, a bastardization of his name Lawrence. He picked up his nickname from a friend who said he resembled a Hindu holy man (yogi). He began playing baseball in local American Legion leagues, where he learned the basics of play as a catcher. After rejecting an offer from the St. Louis Cardinals he signed with the New York Yankees in 1942. He is generally considered to be one of the five best catchers in history. In two recent (2004) approaches by sabermetricians Berra is ranked first by the Bill James Win Shares method and third by the Total Baseball Total Player Wins method.
Berra is also quite famous for his tendency to malapropism and fracturing the English language in highly provocative, interesting ways; see Yogiisms.
Playing career
Following a spell in the US Navy during World War II he played minor league baseball with the Newark Bears before being called up for 7 games in the major leagues in 1946. The following season he played 86 games for the Yankees, and he would play 100+ for each of the following 14 years. During his 19-year career as a Yankee the Bronx Bombers dominated baseball, appearing in 14 World Series and winning ten championships. Yogi himself was a 15-time All-Star, and won the league MVP award three times (in 1951, 1954 and 1955) and caught Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 Series.

A catcher and outfielder for the New York Yankees , 1946-1963, with two brief stints as manager. Casey Stengel called him "My Man" - despite the presence of glamour boys like Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio , Yogi was the offensive and defensive heart of Casey's teams. Also famed for his " Yogi-isms ". The feud with George Steinbrenner , begun when Yogi was abruptly fired as manager in 1985, is now over. person ) by borgo (8.4 hr) print C! s I like it! Wed Jan 28 2004 at 16:31:57 "To me, he is a great man. I am lucky to have him and so are my pitchers...He springs on a bunt like it was another dollar." "He'd fall in a sewer and come up with a gold watch." Both of those quotes came from the infinitely quotable Casey Stengel , Berra's manager for many, many years. I don't think you have to be a fan of baseball to have heard of Yogi Berra. After all, he's famous for his many strange quotes and seemingly different way of looking at things. Over the years, he's lent his face and name to many a product (anybody remember Yoohoo ?) but if it wasn't for his abilities on the diamond , none of that would have been possible.

Bodog is the most trusted brand in online entertainment and we've got 12 years experience to prove it BERRA, YOGI As a player, Yogi Berra carried a public image as a lovable, cuddly figure with a propensity for malapropisms along with one of the most potent clutch bats in the American League. As a manager, he tended to show a crustier side of his personality although this did not prevent him from winning a pennant with a New York club in each league. No player won more World Series championship rings than Berra, who earned 10. A Yankee for 18 seasons, he also holds records for appearing in the most Series (14) and most Series games (75), and for having the most hits (71) and at-bats (259). Spanning the eras of Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle, Berra led the Yankees in runs batted in for seven straight seasons (1949-55). The winner of three MVP awards, the lefty-swinging catcher reached the 20-homer mark 11 times (10 consecutively) and topped 100 RBI five times. A 15-time All-Star, he had a lifetime batting average of .285 and slugged 358 home runs (313 of them as a catcher, a major league record when he retired).
