Roy Campanella On November 19, 1921, one of the greatest African American catchers in baseball history was born. Roy Campanella or known to some simply as “Campy” was born in a neighborhood of Philadelphia known as Homestead. While growing up in this area Campanella attended Simon Gratz High School in urban Philadelphia. Campanella was the son of an Italian father and an African American mother and he stood at a stout 5’9, 190 pounds. (www.baseball-reference.com/c/camparo01.shtml ) www.nlbpa.com/campanellaroy.html During his ten overall seasons with the Brooklyn Dodgers (including his time at the end of the 1948 season) Campanella played in five World Series. He led the National League in putouts by a catcher six different times. “Campy” hit 242 home run’s which is quite impressive for a catcher, and he was the National League Most Valuable Player in 1951, 1953, and once again in 1955. During his 1953 season “Campy” set a single season record for catchers with 41 home runs, 142 runs batted in, and a .312 batting average. Another interesting stat is that from 1949 until 1953, Roy Campanella caught every single inning for the National League in the All – Star Game. Campanella’s final career stats included 1,214 games player, 1,161 hits, 242 home runs, 856 runs batted in, and an overall batting average of .276. “Campy” was an eight time National League All-Star and a three time National League Most Valuable Player.( www.hickoksports.com/biograph/campanel.shtml

2) I have made the worst quiz on earth.
So bad that Henry Hascup didn't even want to enter
So bad that if someone else had turned in ONE correct answer, they would have gotten SECOND place. Without further ado, MapleSyrupMan does a SWEET job and gets his choice of prizes :clapping :clapping :clapping He can now claim to have wiped out Henry in MSM's only quiz entered. Campanella was also a pioneer of baseball integration. When he debuted with the Dodgers on April 20, 1948, he became just the sixth African American to play major league baseball in the 20th century. Campanella: One of the Top Five
Vote
by user Harold Friend LouGehrig Let us go back to the thrilling days of yesteryear, back to a time when there were sixteen major league teams and one of the most heated of all baseball debates involved two catchers who played in New York. The Sporting News was still strictly a baseball newspaper, Sport Magazine was the top monthly sports magazine, and Time Magazine still carried baseball articles because the fledging Sports Illustrated had yet to develop a readership. In 1955, the Brooklyn Dodgers Roy Campanella and the Yankees' Yogi Berra each had a marvelous season, but the 5'8" half-Italian Brooklyn catcher outdid the 5'8" all-Italian Yankees catcher during the regular season and, for the first and only time, in the World Series. In , a year that lives in Yankees' infamy, Roy Campanella batted .318, hit 32 home runs, batted in 107 runs, had a .395 on base average, and slugged .583. He was considered the best catcher in baseball and the "experts" placed him in the same category as Bill Dickey Mickey Cochrane , and Gabby Hartnett Statistics can describe and statistics can infer, but statistics cannot observe or quantify intangibles. Roy Campanella Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 19, 1921. Played for the Baltimore Elite Giants of the Negro Leagues from 1937 to 1942. Made his Major League debut on April 20, 1948, with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Played with the Dodgers until 1957. In 1953, he set single-season records for catchers with 41 home runs and a National League-best 142 RBI's. His home run record lasted until 1996, when it was broken by Todd Hundley. His career was ended by an auto accident prior to the 1958 season that left him paralyzed from the chest down. Although physical therapy eventually allowed him to regain use of his arms and hands, he was confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. His final major league game, on September 29, 1957, was also the last major league game ever played at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field. Campanella played in a total of 1,215 games, 1,183 of them as a catcher. He was a member of five World Series teams (1949, 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956), and eight All-Star Team teams (1949-1956). He led National League catchers in putouts six times, hit 242 home runs as a catcher, and was the National League MVP in 1951, 1953, and 1955. In May 1959, the Dodgers (by now located in Los Angeles) played an exhibition game against the New York Yankees at the Coliseum in his honor. The game's attendance of more than 93,000 remains the largest crowd ever to attend a Major League Baseball Game.
