TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Orlando Cepeda, the Baby Bull who earned his reputation with a big bat, and three others were elected to the Hall of Fame today by the Veterans Committee. Former umpire Nestor Chylak, turn-of-the-century manager Frank Selee and Negro Leagues pitcher Smokey Joe Williams also were selected. The 12-member Veterans panel, which included Ted Williams and Stan Musial, passed over Bill Mazeroski, Dom DiMaggio, former manager Dick Williams and umpire Doug Harvey. Candidates needed 75 percent nine votes for election. Voting totals were not released. Induction ceremonies will be held July 25 at Cooperstown, N.Y. Nolan Ryan, George Brett and Robin Yount were elected in January by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Cepeda was the NL's rookie of the year in 1958 with San Francisco and the league's first unanimous MVP in 1967 with St. Louis. He hit .297 with 379 home runs and 1,365 RBIs. Cepeda, 61, missed by just seven votes in the BBWAA election five years ago, his final try with the writers. He came close last year in voting by the Veterans. In 1975, Cepeda was arrested at an airport on charges of trying to pick up 160 pounds of marijuana. He was sentenced to five years and served 10 months widely believed to have worked against him in previous bids for the Hall.

Induction Speeches
Orlando Cepeda
Transcript of Orlando Cepeda's speech, July 25, 1999: Bud Selig: Orlando Cepeda, San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves, Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox, and Kansas City Royals. Orlando was a powerful first baseman. A consistent run producer for seventeen major league seasons. Not withstanding chronic knee problems. His ability to drive the ball with authority was respected and feared by the opposition. A unanimous selection for both the 1958 National League Rookie of the Year Award and the 1967 Most Valuable Player, Orlando was an eleven time All-Star. He led the National League in home runs, 46, and runs batted in, 142, in 1961. He batted .300 nine times and slugged 379 home runs. His stalwart leadership propelled his clubs to three World Series. Congratulations, Orlando. Orlando Cepeda: Thank you. Thank you very much. Never came to my mind that a kid from Puerto Rico at the age of 17, come into the states and try a new venture in life. It's a great honor, a great honor to be here today in front of these wonderful human beings. Very talented people who played the game and lived the game they were supposed to play and live. I have to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to Bill Rigney, who in 1958 let me know right from the beginning "you are going to be my first baseman no matter what." In '58 I didn't supposed to make the team. In '58 I didn't supposed to play in the big leagues. But thank you to Bill Rigney who give me the confidence to go to the field and do the best.

I guess you are very selfish or stupid or both. You are very lucky to get a good treatment in the US where the doctors treat you like customer and not as a patient. Last January in NY I had to see a doctor for a throat infection, I stayed in his office less than 1 minute, 2 weeks later I had to go back for a bronchite. In the US, even if you have access to the system, they just treat you like cattle. Doctors are business men.... Another good exemple, a friend of mine in Orlando Florida had a quist on an ovaire, the doctor told her that she could never have children again: 3 months later she was pregnant. Are you sure that in Italy you did not get brain surgery ?
