June 09, 2002
New York (AP) — Roger Clemens didn’t give Barry Bonds anything to swing at. Instead, the Rocket hit him — just as he hinted.
Clemens plunked Bonds with a pitch on his protective arm guard and walked him three times as the New York Yankees pitched around the San Francisco slugger all afternoon and beat the Giants 4-2 Sunday.
The tasty matchup of future Hall of Famers — the best hitter of this generation facing perhaps its most dominant pitcher for the first time in the regular season — was a letdown for fans after an exciting buildup. Clemens got his 288th career victory while Bonds took only two swings.
Bonds drew four walks, tying a major league record with three intentional passes in a nine-inning game. He reached base in 11 of 14 plate appearances in the series.
Nick Johnson’s two-out, two-run double off closer Robb Nen in the eighth inning gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead, and Rondell White followed with an RBI single.
New York took two of three in the interleague series and handed the Giants just their second loss in seven games.

Bodog is the most trusted brand in online entertainment and we've got 12 years experience to prove it CLEMENS, ROGER Below the mid-90s fastball, the sturdy legs and precise mechanics is a pinch of madness that keeps everyone on edge. Baseball's only seven-time Cy Young Award winner doesn't deny that he is different. "If someone met me on a game day," Roger Clemens said in 1990 while with Boston, "he wouldn't like me. The days in between, I'm the 'goodest' guy you can find." Game day meant obsessive preparation and focus in a vacuum. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound righthander read his detailed journals on hitters and umpires, exercised and ran in the outfield. He didn't like to talk with anyone. A teammate posted a label over his locker: "Possessed Rebel." Roger Clemens won three of his seven Cy Young Awards pitching for the Boston Red Sox.When the game began, his focus narrowed to the confrontation with batters. If they succeeded too much or tried to show him up, he would pitch them inside, knock them off their feet, or worse, plunk them.

Oh pleeeeeze, Pat
It's starting the call for Pat Gillick to make a move before the July 31 trade deadline. Posted by Shannon Fears at July 9, 2003 04:31 PM Comments Well, Ken apparently doesn't get it... He had me up until the remark about a quality starting pitcher. The Mariners have Rafael Soriano, a quality starting pitcher, waiting in the wings. You tell me, is there ANY pitcher on the Mariners staff you would give up right now? Yet another uninformed writer looking for a name, rather than results. Posted by: Dave Sund at July 10, 2003 12:47 AM What Mariner's pitcher would I give up? Let's see, somebody whose perceived vale is greater than his actual value. That would have to be....Ryan Franklin. I'd much rather see Soriano get into the rotation. I wonder if we could package Franklin into a trade to get Brian Giles? Check out the AL's Defense Independent Pitching Stats ERA (short method) through last night's games. Who has the best rotation? Nothing's changed from before the year started. It's the Yankees.

Clemens, Roger (William Roger Clemens), 1962-, American baseball player, b. Dayton, Ohio. Noted for his competitive fire, Clemens is one of baseball's great power pitchers. After starring at the Univ. of Texas, he joined (1984) the Boston Red Sox as a starting pitcher. In 1986 he was the American League's Most Valuable Player, and won the league's Cy Young Award (the first of a record seven), with a 24-4 won-lost record, a 2.48 earned run average, and a record 20 strikeouts in one 9-inning game (a feat he repeated in 1996). He moved (1997) to Toronto and then pitched (1999-2003) for the New York Yankees. Clemens led the league in earned run average in 1986, 1990-92, and 1997-98, and in strikeouts five times. Postponing a planned retirement, he joined (2004-6) the Houston Astros, and won his seventh Cy Young Award in 2004; the following year, at the age of 43, he had the best earned run average (1.87) in major-league baseball. In 2007 he signed with the Yankees.

I put the date in the title, since that's the 2nd of his two 20 K performances. If/when I get the 1st, I'll put that up there also!!! His first:
Clemens's shoulder was still a question mark at the start of the 1986 season, but the 24-year-old responded with one of the finest pitching seasons in major-league history. He won his first three starts and, on April 29, leaped into the national spotlight with 20 strikeouts in a 3-1 win over Seattle, breaking the record of 19 shared by Ryan, Steve Carlton, and Tom Seaver. In that game, Clemens tied an AL record with eight consecutive strikeouts and didn't walk a single batter. Red Sox manager John McNamara said afterwards, "I watched perfect games by Catfish Hunter and Mike Witt, but this was the most awesome pitching performance I've ever seen."
