I say Dale Earnhart (spelling?) too be he was known by a majority of people, especially race fans, and I would not like to see him go. He was pretty nice guy.

I would've loved the "Other" option here but I chose Dale Earnhardt as well. IF I could've added another it would have to be Brian Piccolo

Isn't it ironic?
By Larry Schwartz
Special to ESPN.com
I wrote I saw strong men cry today, in what was mass weeping in Yankee Stadium, and photographers' hands trembling as they recorded the scene of Lou Gehrig's farewell to the game," says the Washington Post's Shirley Povich on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Irony, as we know, is part of life. And death. Is there a better word to use regarding Lou Gehrig? Think of his nickname: "The Iron Horse." It implies endurance. It recalls an indestructible man, one who never called in sick for almost 14 years 2,130 consecutive games, as if we could ever forget that number? And yet, at age 35, in what should be the prime of his life, the New York Yankees first baseman contracts an incurable disease. Two years later, at 37, The Iron Horse is dead. More irony. What is remembered most about the rock-sturdy man that Los Angeles Times columnist Jim Murray called "Gibraltar in cleats?" The 1939 Yankees have a strong claim as the best ever.

"The Iron Horse" had 13 consecutive seasons with both 100 runs scored and 100 RBI, averaging 139 runs and 148 RBI; set an American League mark with 184 RBI in 1931; hit a record 23 grand slams; and won the 1934 Triple Crown. His .361 batting average in seven World Series led the Yankees to six titles. A true gentleman and a tragic figure, Gehrig's consecutive games played streak ended at 2,130 when he was felled by a disease that later carried his own name. He attended Columbia University , where he was a member of a fraternity Phi Delta Theta . However, he could not play intercollegiate baseball since he played baseball for a summer professional league during his freshman year. Lou Gehrig was a powerful first baseman, a fine fielder, and loyal teammate. If he was not quite the player his teammate Babe Ruth was, he was a feared sidekick, and a more reliable presence in the lineup. Gehrig played for the New York Yankees , first base, from .
