One name has recently been spoken again by the baseball reporters, well, his last name anyway. McCovey's Cove has become the aquatic home to many of the home runs hit by slugger Barry Bonds in recent years. Born on January 10, 1938 , this guy is officially older than Sportscenter , but he held stellar years alongside fellow Giant Willie Mays in the 1960's and 70's before being traded to the San Diego Padres . McCovey put in three seasons as a Padre before being bought by the Oakland Athletics at the end of the 1976 season . McCovey entered a large free agency draft held at the end of the season , with such players as Reggie Jackson Joe Rudi Rollie Fingers , and Don Baylor available to teams. McCovey was not signed by any team, but would join the Giants in spring training and proceed to have a standout year. McCovey played three more seasons with the Giants before retiring on June 6, 1980

I guess you are very selfish or stupid or both. You are very lucky to get a good treatment in the US where the doctors treat you like customer and not as a patient. Last January in NY I had to see a doctor for a throat infection, I stayed in his office less than 1 minute, 2 weeks later I had to go back for a bronchite. In the US, even if you have access to the system, they just treat you like cattle. Doctors are business men.... Another good exemple, a friend of mine in Orlando Florida had a quist on an ovaire, the doctor told her that she could never have children again: 3 months later she was pregnant. Are you sure that in Italy you did not get brain surgery ?

White Sox Interactive Forums Baseball Discussions Sox Clubhouse PDA View Full Version : Questions about 1959 World Series TheOldRoman 06-10-2005, 02:55 PM I just got my tape of the 1959 World Series in the mail today. Someone posted a link on this site a couple of weeks ago, and I bought one right away. It was incredible - the tape, not the outcome. I had never seen tape of Fox or Aparicio play until now. It was also great to see the old park and how it looked back in the day, pre paint job. It was beautiful. The Coliseum was a joke as a baseball stadium. It was 251 down the left field line, but there was a 42 foot chain link fence. There was also no batters eye at all. I see the gripe some of the Sox players had about hitting there.
My questions:
Was Big Klu's record of 10 RBIs in a series broken yet? (I assume it has)
Did anyone on this board go to any of those games? If so, what was the atmosphere? What was the city like at that time? How did people handle the loss?
How many members of the 59 team are still alive? I know Al Lopez is, but he is 96, and I dont know what condition he is in. Lip may have the answers for this one. Also, have the Sox indicated that they are bringing back any of the '59 players for the ceremonies before the games against the Dodgers next week? I think they should bring back every living member of that team. Also, when the reach the World Series this year, I want Aparicio and others on the bench in uniform like the Red Sox did last year. I thought that was a very classy move.

But, as a stat junkie, I *definitely* have an appreciation for his amazing longevity and statistical consistency. Dude was a flat-out freak. Consider that he played a good portion of his career in the Second Dead Ball Era (mid- to late-1960s), his numbers are even more staggering.

Summer Odyssey 2005
My Trip has already reached its Highpoint Tonight i went to see the Giants play the cardinals. It was a great matchup (Jason Schmidt vs Mark Mulder) and i had great seats (if you drew a line between 2nd base and me it went right through the batters box). It was a great game with the cardinals prevailing 3-1. I saw Larry Walker hit a splash ball (A dead set no doubter - had to be 430ft +) and Reggie Sanders and Pedro Feliz hit home runs. Then thanks to the kindness of one of the giants employees (Who shall remain nameless for the moment - only because i don't want to get her into any trouble) - i was able to go into the press box and meet the voice of both the Giants radio and ESPN Sunday night Baseball - Mr Jon Miller - and this guy is an absolute class act - he spent the better part of 15 minutes with me discussing baseball and asking about my trip and baseball in Australia - even told me some good stories. And to top it off I had my photo taken and he signed my Giants Program. So thinking this night could not get any better i was preparing to go back to my seats for the start of the game when the same wonderful giants employee asked me to wait and see if she could organise one more thing - that thing turned out to be meeting to Hall of Fame baseball player WILLIE McCOVEY - as in McCOVEY COVE - where Larry walker hit that splash ball. I can say it was honestly the most thrilling moment of my life - and i am not sure how i am going to top it - but i am sure going to give it one almighty crack. If you want to see how good McCovey was - check out his Hall of Fame profile at this URL:
