Chat wrap: Bob Costas on Stan Musial

Musial was gentleman killer
By Larry Schwartz
Special to ESPN.com
"He didn't hit a homer in his last at-bat; he hit a single. He didn't hit in 56 straight games. He married his high school sweetheart and stayed married to her, never married a Marilyn Monroe. He didn't play with the sheer joy and style that goes alongside Willie Mays' name. None of those easy things are there to associate with Stan Musial. All Musial represents is more than two decades of sustained excellence and complete decency as a human being," says Bob Costas on ESPN's SportsCentury series. About half a century before Mark McGwire became The Man, there was another prominent St. Louis Cardinal who was called "The Man" almost like it was part of his name. As in Stan the Man. Stan Musial had 3,630 hits during his 22-year career. Stan Musial was accorded the nickname in Brooklyn, by a Flatbush faithful. As Musial strode to the plate at Ebbets Field in 1946, a fan lamented, "Uh, oh. Here comes the man again; here comes the man."

Here are some of mine.
Musial as a person: It's hard to say, he seems like a nice man. I met him in March of 06 when he signed a Rawlings Official Major League Baseball, but no pictures, inscriptions OR handshakes. I like to shake peoples hands. Anyway, a mediocre guy. If you ask me, he may just be the greatest hitter in NL history. Look at his slugging numbers. I also rank Musial the 9th greatest player ever, and the greatest LF ever. Sorry Barry, but steroids will always get you in my book. Musial lasted over such a long period of time while doing this too. His 1948 season may also be the best by a left fielder ever also. He was insane that year. Stan Musial was, and is still an icon all around baseball, and truly was "The Man."

is the only member of the 3,000-Hit Club to reach the mark with a pinch hit. On May 13, 1958, with Musial at hit #2,999, the Cardinals decided to sit "The Man" from the final game of a series in Chicago so that he could make history at Busch Stadium (formerly Sportsman's Park). But with the Cards trailing 3-1 in the sixth, St. Louis manager Fred Hutchinson opted to bat Musial for weak-hitting Redbird pitcher Sam Jones. Musial came through with a double to left, sparking a rally that would push the Cardinals to victory. The 37-year-old Musial finished the 1958 season with a .337 batting average—third best in the National League and "sandwiched" between the next two members of the Club: Willie Mays (.347) and Hank Aaron (.326). “Where what happened yesterday is being preserved today.”
Stan Musial Date and Place of Birth: November 21, 1920 Donora, Pennsylvania Baseball Experience: Major League
Position: Outfield
Rank: Seaman Second Class
Military Unit: US Navy Area Served: Pacific Theater of Operations Associated Press March 17, 1945 Stanley F “Stan” Musial was born on November 21, 1920, in Donora, Pennsylvania. He started his professional career as a pitcher with Williamson in 1938, and went to Daytona Beach in 1940, where a shoulder injury prompted a move to the outfield. He moved up to Springfield of the Western Association in 1941 and played 12 games for the Cardinals before the year was out. Musial batted .357 to win the National League batting title and MVP award in 1943. During the winter months of 1943-1944, Musial, along with Danny Litwhiler, Hank Borowy, Dixie Walker and Frankie Frisch, was part of a USO sponsored group that traveled to Alaska and the Aleutian Islands entertaining troops. When it became obvious that Musial would be inducted, Pete Reiser tried to convince him to sign up with the Army. That way, Reiser could get Musial to Fort Riley where he could play with the service team. "I told Pete, 'Naw, I'm going into the Navy'," he explained to author Frederick Turner. "I just liked the Navy for some reason - the water and all. You know where a lot of those guys wound up who were at Fort Riley? At the Battle of the Bulge."
