    Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Tony Perez , born in 1942, Cuban baseball player, a key member of the successful Cincinnati Reds clubs of the early and mid-1970s. Perez was the second Cuban-born player to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, following Negro Leagues star Mart­n Dihigo Atanasio Rigal Perez was born in Ciego de vila, Cuba. He worked in a sugarcane factory in Cuba before signing a contract with the Reds at the age of 17. Perez spent several years in the minor leagues and as a reserve player in the major leagues before becoming Cincinnati’s full-time third baseman in 1967. In his first year as a starter, Perez batted .290 with 26 home runs and 102 runs batted in (RBIs). It was the first of 11 consecutive seasons in which he drove in more than 90 runs. Perez soon gained a reputation as a clutch hitter. In 1969 he batted .294 with 37 home runs and 122 RBIs. He followed in 1970 with his best season: a .317 batting average, 40 home runs, and 129 RBIs.     TONY PEREZ 1998 Santa Ana High School Senior Tony Perez Is a Highly Recognized Athlete in Orange County as well as the State of California. He has participated in both cross-country and the sport of Wrestling. As a Cross Country Runner, Tony was a participant on the CIF 3rd place Div. I team. He also ran at the state tournament and contributed to the teams 4th place finish in State. As a 103 lb. Wrestler, Tony has achieved many accolades. He is a 4x Varsity Letterman and a 3x GoldenWest League Champion. A 2x CIF Div. III place winner, 2nd and 3rd respectively. He is also a 2x Calif. State Qualifier and was a State runner-up at his weight class in 97', thus qualifying him for the National High School wrestling championships in Pittsburgh, PA. At the Nationals, Tony competed against state champions from across the United States. His performance was outstanding and wrestled his way to earn himself the prestigious title of "National Champion." In Tony's 4 years as a Varsity Wrestler, he has been named 1st and 2nd team all- county his Jr. and Sr. year at his perspective weight class. He has compiled a career record of 150 wins and 39 losses with well over 70 pins. During his 4 years as an athlete, he maintained a 3.2 G.P.A. Tony finished his senior year with the honor of Santa Ana High School Athlete of the Year.

Then, one year, they didn't coordinate it right and they actually ended up giving him enough votes to get in! :eek2: If that's true - it's very sad. I once was on the Puckett should not get in train - - then I looked it over - - even with the short career - - he had a pretty good run as a CF - - and, there have been very few true CFers that have hit - - I think I ended up with Puckett being the 8th best hitting CF ever or something like that? I'm OK with him now.

    Atanasio Pérez Rigal , better known as Tony Pérez (born May 14 in Ciego de Ávila Cuba ), is a former player in Major League Baseball . After playing third base in the early part of his career with the Cincinnati Reds , from 1972 onward he starred at first base . In the early part of the 1970s he was a key member of Cincinnati's " Big Red Machine ". Apart from his years with the Reds (1964-76, '84-86), he also played for the Montreal Expos Boston Red Sox (1980-82) and Philadelphia Phillies (1983). After retiring, Pérez went on the manage with the Reds and Florida Marlins In , Pérez was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame . Pèrez was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1998. edit
