NEWSMAKER: KIRBY PUCKETT From humble beginnings to the Hall of Fame
Kirby Puckett played baseball with youthful exuberance rarely seen away from the sandlot. (CP Photo) Even Kirby Puckett's death had Hall of Fame overtones.
When the perennial all-star and Minnesota Twin fan favourite died Monday at age 45, no Hall-of-Famer but one died younger. That one was the legendary Lou Gehrig.
In a 12-year career cut short by the glaucoma that blinded him in his right eye, Puckett was an all-star in all but two seasons, won six Gold Gloves, and helped engineer two World Series victories for the Minnesota Twins.
Though his post-baseball career was marred by allegations of spousal abuse, and a sexual assault trial which saw him acquitted, his rise to baseball superstardom was remarkable both because of his stature and his origins.
The youngest of six sons and three daughters, Puckett was born in 1960 in Chicago and raised there. When he was young, his family moved to the Robert Taylor Homes on the city's south side.
Completed in 1962, the public housing project consisted of over two dozen 16-storey high-rise buildings. It was trumpeted as a community that would replace previous ghettos in the area, where tenant selection would be rigorous and residents would have a voice in their living conditions.

This is the ultimate team effort. Al Michaels, ABC Sports
    Opening Statement
Baseball fans remember the 1987 Minnesota Twins as an unlikely team to become world champions. They were a wisecracking, practical-joking bunch of guys that Sports Illustrated labeled the "Hogan's Heroes" of baseball great fun in the dugout or the clubhouse to be sure, but not the kind of superstars that win pennants and titles. There was no one player the fans could point to as an overpowering presence that could lift the team above the competition. Instead, as ABC Sports commentator Al Michaels noted, the Twins made it to the AL West title, the American League pennant, and eventually the top of the heap based on the day in and day out contributions of every single person on the team. In recognition of this, the Twins became the first team not an individual star, but a whole team given the coveted place of honor on a box of Wheaties.
    Facts of the Case
Presented here are all seven games of the 1987 World Series between the Minnesota Twins and the St. Louis Cardinals. The Twins won in seven games, earning them the second World Series title in franchise history and the first since the team's move to Minnesota in 1961. They also became the first team in history to win a World Series without winning a single game in the opposing team's ballpark, making up for their lack of road wins with the awe-inspiring, ear-shattering home field advantage of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Were there better choices, that year's crop of retirees didn't have any ripe harvests, or did you simply feel the players listed just weren't overly impressive as you'd feel they'd require for induction? Skipper Steve 12-01-2001, 08:57 AM Rick Ferrell - - if I heard (and remember) the story right - - - he was a really nice guy who had friends on the Vets Committee - - and they would always throw him a few votes just to make him feel good each year (seeing the votes). Then, one year, they didn't coordinate it right and they actually ended up giving him enough votes to get in! :eek2: If that's true - it's very sad. I once was on the Puckett should not get in train - - then I looked it over - - even with the short career - - he had a pretty good run as a CF - - and, there have been very few true CFers that have hit - - I think I ended up with Puckett being the 8th best hitting CF ever or something like that? I'm OK with him now.

FORT MYERS, Fla. Former Minnesota Twins center fielder Kirby Puckett had a stroke at his Arizona home Sunday and was taken to a hospital for surgery, the team announced from its spring training camp.
Puckett, 44, who led the Twins to World Series titles in 1987 and 1991, was taken to a Scottsdale hospital.
Geez... he's only 44!!! Hopefully he makes a full recovery with no bad after affects. catman 03-05-2006, 05:33 PM He's got several things going for him here. #1, he got quick treatment. That is very important in a situation like this one. #2, he is only 44. Younger is better than older when strokes happen. #3, he could buy the hospital he was taken to first. That helps as well.
I wish him the best, and will wait and see how things go. NY Jay 05 03-05-2006, 08:19 PM I hope he recovers as quick as possible. themush 03-05-2006, 08:24 PM

    Kirby Puckett
One of the most popular players of his (or any) time, Kirby Puckett radiated an effervescent joy both on and off the field that endeared him to fans, media and players alike. Built like a cross between a fireplug and a bowling ball, the 5'8" 210-lb Puckett collected more hits in his first 10 years than (2,040) than any player in the 20th century. When glaucoma prematurely ended his career before the 1996 season, his .318 lifetime batting average ranked as the highest for any right-handed batter since World War II.
