Moe’s shining moment
I really don’t intend for this to morph into an obit column, but . . . I was driving to work a couple weeks ago when I heard that Moe Drabowsky had passed away on June 10. My first thought was, of course, the 1966 World Series and 11 strikeouts . Drabowsky was one of those players whose career was pretty much defined by a single World Series game, like Howard Ehmke or Don Larsen. Or Bill Bevens and Cookie Lavagetto, who shared the same spotlight, although Bevens got the short end of that one. Anyway, Drabowsky had a reasonably successful, if not outstanding, career. It spanned 17 years, certainly a significant tour of duty, over which he posted a mediocre 88-105 win-loss record with 55 saves. Drabowsky was also known as a clubhouse prankster, and once gave Commissioner Bowie Kuhn a hotfoot, which by itself should have gained him entry into Cooperstown. But for his first 11 years in the majors, his claim to fame was defined by dubious brushes with greatness. He tied a record by hitting four batters in one game in 1957, allowed Stan Musial’s 3000th hit a year later, and was the losing pitcher when Early Wynn finally captured his 300th career victory in 1963. Moe also claimed the first victory for the Kansas City Royals franchise in 1969, and to my knowledge is still the only MLB player to have been born in Poland (his parents immigrated to the US in 1938 when he was three). After toiling with also-rans like the Chicago Cubs and Kansas City A’s, he had the fortune of being dealt to the Baltimore Orioles in time for their first World Series appearance in 1966. Moe, formerly a starting pitcher, had enjoyed a rebirth as part of a deep Oriole bullpen, going 6-0 with seven saves and a 2.81 ERA. His legacy would change with one appearance on October 5, 1966.

NYYFans.com Forum The Yankees Yankees: Inside The Lines PDA View Full Version : Did Jeter invent the jump in the air throw? 05-25-06, 11:57 AM You have seen the play may times. Jeter goes to the hole on a grounder, gets it, jumps in the air and then twists his body to then fire to first. The play to end yesterdays game with the Dirty Sox is a fresh example. My question is who started that particular move? Prior to Jeter, all the shortstops I remember would just plant their feet and throw. Anyone out there that has seen someone do it before Jeter? I know this is fluff material but I am having lunch now  and I'm tired of reading about the walking wounded we have on our team. So kick in those baseball mental reels and come up with a shortstop (if not Jeter). 05-25-06, 11:59 AM Jeter doesn't need to do that move if he doesn't have such an awful first step
that being said, he's the best at it Stupid Flanders 05-25-06, 12:01 PM Jeter's poor range invented it. 05-25-06, 12:02 PM Jeter should have volunteered to play CF when they traded for A-Rod....

Mark Ellis: stranded at second
Mark Ellis is not clutch. He's often hurt during the season, was hurt this postseason, and hit a paltry .249 this year for the A's. He is, however, the best defensive second baseman in baseball, in part due to the excellent tutelage of Ron Washington (who I hope remains in Oakland next season).
So, I'm a bit miffed that Ellis did not win his first Gold Glove award for, statistically speaking, one of the best defensive season's ever for a second baseman. Dumbfounded as I was, I went into sabermetrics mode and investigated the stats for Ellis and 2006 Gold Glove winner Mark Grudzielanek of the Kansas City Royals. Let's have a look:
Grudzielanek played 41 more innings than Ellis, and made two more errors (Ellis made only two all season). Their total chances were even (Ellis 632, Grudzielanek 637). Grudzielanek turned 20 more double plays that Ellis, but you know that Kansas City sucks and probably allowed a lot more runners on base than Oakland. Their put-outs and assists are relatively even. Both players had their best years' ever defensively (and, as I mentioned earlier, Ellis' .997 fielding percentage was the best ever for an AL second baseman). Given the latter stat, wouldn't you think that the Golden Glove was Ellis' for the taking? I mean, c'mon: BEST FUCKING SEASON EVER BY A SECOND BASEMAN! Not only that, but when Ellis got hurt in game three of the ALDS and Jimenez came in for the ALCS, Jimenez made as many errors IN ONE GAME as Ellis did during the entire season! Ellis is a G, and he should have taken the GG.
