    George Sisler
ज्ञानकोश: - The Indological Knowledgebase George Harold Sisler March 24 March 26 ), nicknamed "Gorgeous George," was an American star in Major League Baseball , and one of the greatest fielding first basemen of all time. He set hitting records which no one has equalled in the last eighty years. Ty Cobb called him "the nearest thing to a perfect ballplayer." He is widely regarded as having been the greatest player in St. Louis Browns history. Born in Manchester, Ohio and having played college ball for coach Branch Rickey at the University of Michigan , where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering, Sisler came into the major leagues as a pitcher for the St. Louis Browns in . He signed as a free agent after the minor league contract he had signed as a minor four years earlier, and which the Pittsburgh Pirates had purchased, was declared void. The following year he switched to first base; like Babe Ruth , he was too good a hitter to be limited to hitting once every four days. He posted a record of 5-6 with a 2.35

SimCentral.NET Forums Sports Talk Major League Baseball PDA View Full Version : Hall Of Fame Spotlight: George Sisler 04-17-2002, 11:31 PM Sisler was the greatest St. Louis Brown of them all and one of the half-dozen finest first basemen in baseball history. Like Babe Ruth, he came to the majors as a lefthanded pitcher. Like Ruth, his hitting was too phenomenal to be restricted to a pitcher's schedule. He arrived in St. Louis in 1915, the same year as Rogers Hornsby, and for 11 seasons they were rivals in excellence.
Branch Rickey was his mentor: Coach at Michigan in George's undergraduate days as an outstanding college pitcher, wily counselor in the maneuvering that eventually led him to the Browns, and manager of the team when he got there.
Other major league clubs were interested in him; Barney Dreyfuss was certain that the Pirates owned him and, under baseball law, perhaps he did. In 1911 underage and without parental consent, George signed a professional contract. He received no money and played no games, but while he pursued his education the contract was sold to Pittsburgh. After four years of anguish, argument and indecision, the National Commission ruled the contract invalid and made Sisler a free agent. He graduated with a mechanical engineering degree, considered a fistful of offers, including one from Pittsburgh, and decided for manager Rickey and the Browns. His was the first of several player-allocation cases that eventually moved irate club owners like Dreyfuss to unseat the Commission and replace it with Judge Landis.

Baseball Fever The Teams of Yesteryear St. Louis Browns PDA View Full Version : This Date in Browns History! Pages : 08-05-2004, 10:00 AM This thread will work best with broad contribution from all of you old Browns fans. (There's that redundancy again.) The object is to fill in the calendar pages with special or peculiar moments in Browns history. (I threw in the word "peculiar" because we had so many things happen that properly fall into that category.) I'll start things off with one that some of you may have read about that seems to fill the bill as a baseball oddity. Hopefully, someone else will have something to cover tomorrow, August 6th. - It would be great to eventually fill every day of the year. - Such a background of information would make great material for a St. Louis Browns calendar or day planner. - That is, if you don't mind starting your day with frequently painful reminders.
At any rate, I'll volunteer to be the leadoff man in this little enterprise:
August 5, 1923: Ruth Bats Right-Handed Against Browns. Against the Browns, Ruth again bats righthanded. After the Babe hits his 26th and 27th HRs off of Ray Kolp, relief P Elam Vangilder takes no chances with Ruth and walks him intentionally in the 11th and again in the 13th inning. Ruth bats righty against Vangilder. Bob Meusel's single wins the game 9-8.

    How Good Was George Sisler?
    by Harold Friend
George Sisler set the record for most hits in a season in 1920 when he hit safely 257 times over a 154 game schedule. In 2004, Ichiro Suzuki set a new mark by getting 262 hits over the modern 162 game schedule. George Sisler was one of the greatest individuals who ever played the game, a fact that some modern fans refuse to accept.
    Better Than the League
George Sisler’s first full season was 1916, a year in which the American League teams batted .248. The twenty four year old Sisler batted .305 or .057 points higher than the league. From 1917-1919, Sisler’s combined batting average was .349 compared to the league’s .256, which is an incredible .093 points higher than the league.
    257 Hits in 1920
In 1920, baseball’s powers introduced a new, lively ball after some White Sox players didn’t try their hardest in the 1919 World Series. With the new baseball, the American League’s batting average jumped from .268 in 1919 to .284 in 1920, a year in which George Sisler hit safely 257 times, batted .407, and had 86 extra base hits, including 19 home runs. Only Babe Ruth hit more home runs that year. Sisler stole 42 bases and struck out 19 times in 631 official at bats. His .407 batting average was an unimaginable .123 points above the league’ batting average.
