Born: December 26 , in Mobile, Alabama Link to Ozzie Smith's page in the Baseball Hall of Fame website http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/hofers_and_honorees/hofer_bios/Smith_Ozzie.htm
Smith broke in with the San Diego Padres , and then was traded to the Saint Louis Cardinals in 1979. He would finish his career with the Cardinals. A weak hitter early in his career, Smith improved at the plate through the years. His real asset was his glove. NYYFans.com Forum General Baseball Forums Around The Majors PDA View Full Version : Piazza PadsFan 05-14-03, 04:13 PM I just cant stand this guy. he pads his stats by hitting a few homers at coors and now I'm gonna hear from mets fans that hes "tearing the cover off the ball". what a joke silverdsl 05-14-03, 07:51 PM He may not be hitting as well this season as seasons past, but Piazza is far more than just a player who pads his stats by hitting homeruns in Coors Field. Over the course of his career he's been an outstanding hitter who is one of the best hitting catchers ever.
-Deborah PadsFan 05-14-03, 09:00 PM his stats right now are extremely misleading. you'd look at his current line:
.327, 7 HR, 14 RBI
and say wow thats pretty good. but in reality when you subtract the coors field effect he only has 4 homers and 9 RBI. not to mention hes only batting .241 with runners in scoring position and .263 in close and late situations.
last year he padded his stats by hitting bombs when his team was up by 10 runs or down by 10 runs (most of the time down by 10 runs) so it overshadowed the fact that he made an out every single time it mattered. I wont argue that hes been an outstanding hitter and the best hitting catcher of all-time but his stats over the past few seasons show an obvious decline and those same exact stats are very misleading C. Common Unity SESSION 11 ILLUSTRATING THE POINT Baseball All-Star Ozzie Smith: Wrapped in Encouragement Ozzie Smith, a 15-time National League All-Star, is considered by many to be the greatest shortstop of all time. On July 28, 2002, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame and in his acceptance speech compared his journey to the construction of a baseball: “Protecting the cork center of this ball and reinforcing it are two distinct rubber shells. For me these two layers reflect two vital and affirming shells of my core dream. The first shell is my faith in God. With him, I have everything. Without him, I have nothing. The second shell is the faith I had in myself which came through my mother's love and encouragement. The second part of the construction of this baseball is manufactured by the wrapping of over 200 yards of wool around the core. I see that this is the second critical part of my journey. I refer to it as the strands of love and faith strands of love and faith that so many other people have wrapped around Ozzie Smith as a person and wrapped around my dream through their love and faith in me. I will never forget the faith that my high school coach, Art Webb had in me. Just about the time I was questioning my ability and expressed thoughts of going home, Art got wind of my feelings, called me up, and sternly told me, "Oz, you're not going to quit. You're going to hang in there and weather the storm!" And because of that call and his faith in me, I stayed.”

May 14 th 1 John 4:7-11 Mother's Day: A Mother’s Love Pastor Terry Defoe, Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.            Our Bible text on this Mother’s Day is found in the book of First John chapter 4, beginning at verse 7. The Apostle John says:            7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. International Bible Society This is our text. Please be seated.            Christian a uthor Tony Campolo said that when his wife, Peggy, was at home full-time with their children – and someone would ask, "And what is it that you do, my dear?" she would respond, tongue in cheek:            "I’m socializing two Homo sapiens into the dominant values of the Judeo-Christian tradition in order that they might be instruments for the transformation of the social order into the kind of eschatological utopia that God willed from the beginning of creation."

Clutch BBS Houston Sports Texans, Astros, Comets PDA View Full Version : Adam Everett (SS)
DavidS 04-18-2004, 06:29 PM Over the last few years (decade) I've been waiting for a SS to arrive that brought us some defense/fielding. Last year he had 17 errors. So far so good this year (zero).
I know it's too early to tell, but so far I'm liking what I'm seeing with his game. Jimy Williams probably only expected a .250 hitter. But we've gotten more from the bat than they've expected which is a BONUS from a SS position. I'd be happy if he averaged only .250. But fielding was key for me as a fan...
All I wanted was a "human vacuum cleaner" at the SS position. :D I hope he holds up. At least on the fielding department.
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlbpa/players/6389/career meh 04-18-2004, 06:45 PM Nothing against Everett, but we have not seen great pitching yet this year, other than Sheets. The Brewers, Cards, and the Giants all have mediocre pitching staffs. It's still more likely that he'll be a .260 hitter this year than a .290-.300 hitter. I do like the fact that he's shown some power and ability to take some walks. But Jimy needs to STOP having him bunt so much. I mean, it's one thing to have your #2 hitter bunt against guys like a Wood or a Beckett in a low scoring game, but it's just not right to waste an out like that against scrub pitching.
I haven't seen many Astros games last year. But sometimes, errors are caused by players who are too good, because they get to balls that others won't even get to.
