NYYFans.com Forum General Baseball Forums Around The Majors PDA View Full Version : Pujols vs. Bonds Rocketman 09-11-03, 03:49 PM Bonds is the best player in the NL, but Pujols may be overtaking him in the MVP race right now. Despite having a much higher OPS, Bonds doesn't have NEARLY the counting numbers that Pujols does. Yesterday he hit his 40th and 41st HRs of the year... a tremendous achievement. That moves him into first place for home runs, and he's first in batting average. Pujols is also second in RBI, eight behind Colorado slugger Preston Wilson. I can't imagine how he won't win the NL MVP award, even in St. Louis doesn't make the playoffs.

Following up on old complaints about how often some batters hit into
double plays, I was very pleased to notice today that Baseball
Prospectus has a new stats feature much like I wanted to see.
They look at the number of double play opportunities, defined as
number of plate appearances with a runner on 1st base with less than
two outs. They then compare into how many double plays you hit
(whether you ground or fly into a double play, although maybe not
    strike out).
The Giants have had 1149 double play opportunities this year among 34
different batters, but 12 hitters combine for 1018 of those opportunities. Here are the stats (opportunies, double plays, the rate, and the net double plays to what is average): NAME DP_OPPS DP DPRATE NETDP So Rich Aurilia isn't the worst on the team, as some people thought, but he is certainly pretty high. I do not know that I have any other comments here since I find nothing else that surprising, maybe except
