    • The Great Backlash has made the laissez-faire revival possible, but this does not mean that it speak to us in the manner of the capitalists of old, invoking the divine right of money or demanding that the lowly learn their place in the great chain of being. On the contrary; the backlash imagines itself as a foe of the elite, as the voice of the unfairly persecuted, as a righteous protest of the people on history’s receiving end. That is champions today control all three branches of government matters not a whit. That is greatest beneficiaries are the wealthiest people on the plant does not give it pause.
      • Introduction: What's the Matter with America (pp. 5-6) Old-fashioned values may count when conservatives appear on the stump, but once conservatives are in office the only old-fashioned situation they care to revive is an economic regimen of low wages and lax regulations. Over the last three decades they have smashed the welfare state, reduced the tax burden on corporations and the wealthy, and generally facilitated the country’s return to a nineteenth-century pattern of wealth distribution. Thus the primary contradiction of the backlash: it is a working-class movement that has done incalculable, historic harm to working class people. The leaders of the backlash may talk Christ, but they walk corporate. Values may "matter most" to voters, but they always take a backseat to the needs of money once the elections are won. This is a basic earmark of the phenomenon, absolutely consistent across its decades-long history. Abortion is never halted. Affirmative action is never abolished. The culture industry is never forced to clean up its act.

Baseball Fever General Baseball PDA View Full Version : What are the top Training Aids? tominct 01-20-2006, 06:34 PM There are tons of products out there, and there has been some discussion about a few of them on different threads, so why not strat an entirely new thread?
    OK, I guess a Tee is ideal. What about a Swing-A-Way? A Hands-Back Tee?
Wheeled Pitching machines v. Iron Mike arm machines?
Comments? 01-20-2006, 07:23 PM Great idea for a thread - I'm sure we will hear pro and cons of all different kinds of training aids. I believe some are useful and others are a means for their creators to make a buck or two.
I have had success with the Hands Back Hitter - used as a station at practice to achieve certain goals.
Of course a hitting tee is ideal. There are plastic balls similar to wiffle balls, called "pickle balls" that last way longer than your average plastic type balls. The absolute best training aid - a good instructor! :lookitup hiddengem 01-20-2006, 08:51 PM A good friend and collegue of mine showed me this product, and I'm interested in it. I often have the hardest time getting kids to "keep the box" throughout the load and rotation. They always want to "bar" the lead arm, which creates drag through the zone. This might be something the kids can wear to get the feeling of keeping the lead arm bent. I believe Jbooth has purchased this to see how it is. Here is the link to the product and a picture of the box, in case anybody doesn't know what it is.

Mark Leibovich on the Liberal Moment
Mark Leibovich of The New York Times looks at what seems to be the liberal moment in the country right now. Well, just how liberal? Thomas Frank , who hasn't made an appearance in this blog for a while, makes the following pungent remark: "A potentially liberal moment . . . assuming that liberal politicians can seize the moment and get beyond their usual plague of incompetence." Here's Leibovich's description of what counts as a liberal resurgence: . . . it's clear that issues once largely walled off to the liberal hinterlands have suddenly gained mainstream acceptance and urgency. "There does seem to be momentum around a set of issues that have traditionally been the property of the left," says David M. Kennedy, the Stanford University historian. Presidential candidates, for instance, can now safely utter "universal health care" without being tarred as supporters of "socialized medicine." Polls show increasing support for raising the minimum wage, stem-cell research, gay and lesbian civil unions, alternative-energy initiatives and increased financial aid to offset the escalating cost of college. Republicans can no longer blockade the cause of global warming to the wild-haired left. Once derided as "Ozone Man" by the former President Bush, Al Gore is now up for a Nobel Peace Prize and an Oscar (while California’s non-Oscar-nominated Republican governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has been hailed as an environmental action hero for introducing stringent emissions standards).

Thomas Frank I was in a bad mood when I wrote that. Thomas Frank In America, we no longer have an institutionalized, organized way of calling business to task - of taking them to account for what they've done - and this is especially true in the cultural realm. Thomas Frank In the last James Bond movie, the villain was a culture captain, a tycoon of culture, a Murdoch figure. It's not as if people don't know what is going on. Thomas Frank These days, of course, the focus of talk about popular liberation through products is mostly associated with the Internet. I've been collecting computer ads and ads dealing with Internet industries. Thomas Frank What becomes fascinating is the way the culture industry doesn't deny it and doesn't try to mitigate it, but tries to sell its products as a way of liberating oneself.
