Kid Heat. Billy The Kid. Wags. The press and the players hunted for a nickname for the canned heat that was Billy Wagner . He threw a precision fastball that approached 100 MPH. His deceptive slider looked an awful lot like a fastball, until it broke in front of the plate. Hitters looked out at the slender man glaring at them from the mound and, before he threw a pitch, they felt fear. With the exception of an injury-riddled 2000 season, he owned the ninth inning, and batters knew it.

    Wagner, Jojima plan
    Met meetings
    BY ADAM RUBIN
    DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
Billy Wagner and Kenji Jojima will find out if they love New York during upcoming visits to the city.
Wagner, the closer coveted by the Mets, will tour neighborhoods and schools and also should meet with potential teammates during a stopover next Monday and Tuesday. The Mets, who arranged Wagner's visit yesterday, are not expected to make him an offer until next week at the earliest because the closer wants to first see if he likes the surroundings.
"I do not expect anything prior to that," agent Bean Stringfellow said yesterday.
The Mets figure to aggressively bid for the 34-year-old Wagner. GM Omar Minaya may be willing to offer as much as $36 million over three years and might consider adding a fourth year, which sealed a deal for Pedro Martinez last winter. Wagner indicated last week that the Phillies had yet to guarantee a third year, which is likely a must to get his signature on a contract.
Stringfellow said eight teams have expressed interest in Wagner. The flame-throwing lefthander went 4-3 with a 1.51 ERA and 38 saves in 41 chances with the Phillies in 2005.

For Some Yes, For Some No
    Harold Friend
Billy Wagner and B. J. Ryan are two pitchers who will demand huge contracts because some teams believe that adding an effective closer will improve their chances of playing baseball in October. Upon closer examination, it might not be worth the expense for some teams but then, for those who believe that one extra win might be the win that makes the difference between a successful season and one of frustration, giving Wagner or Ryan a huge contract might be worth it. A statistic that must be analyzed but that is too often is ignored is the number of blown saves a team suffered, which must then be compared to the chances that a new closer will make a significant difference.
The New York Mets have expressed an interest in signing Billy Wagner. This past season, Mets' relief pitchers had 71 save opportunities. They converted 48 of them for a 67.6% success rate. Billy Wagner converted 38 of 41 save opportunities for a 92.6% success rate. Assuming that Wagner, who is thirty four years old and one of the hardest throwers in the major leagues, were to have a similar season if he were with the 2006 Mets, and assuming that Wagner were to have 41 save opportunites again, Wagner's success rate would produce 38 saves, for an improvement of 11 games compared to 2005 Mets' closers. Hello, Eastern Division winners.

William Edward Wagner (born July in Tannersville, Virginia ) is an American Major League Baseball closer for the Philadelphia Phillies (2004-present). Previously, Wagner played with the Houston Astros (1995-2003). He bats and throws left-handed Wagner is a highly regarded closer in the fact that he routinely throws triple digit fastballs which is rather unusual for his 5'11", 195 lb frame. As a youth, he was a natural right-handed pitcher , but after breaking his throwing arm twice, he taught himself how to use his left arm by throwing nothing but fastballs against a barn wall. Wagner attended Ferrum College and went 17-3 there, while setting single season NCAA records for strikeouts per nine innings (19.1 in ) and fewest hits per nine innings allowed (1.58 in ), and holds the Division III mark for career strikeouts (327 in 182.1 innings pitched). Wagner was inducted into the Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall Of Fame in Salem, Virginia , in February of Wagner was taken in the first round of the June MLB draft by Houston and was used exclusively as a starting pitcher in the minor leagues . He made his major league debut on September 12
