Summary
Research interests in this laboratory focus on molecular mechanisms of hormone action via nuclear receptors and of cytoskeletal associated proteins on proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis of normal and cancerous prostate cells. Research also emphasizes the study of mechanisms by which naturally occurring and/or synthetic compounds effect the chemoprevention and/or chemotherapy of prostate cancer. Lastly, through molecular biology and proteomic approaches, potentially useful genes will be discovered and used as tools for the detection and treatment of prostate cancer. Specific Research Topics 1. Androgens, retinoic acids, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and thyroid hormone are essential factors for growth and differentiation of prostatic cells. The promoters of prostate-specific genes are used as models to understand the interactions of these hormones/vitamins via their nuclear receptors regarding the molecular mechanisms controlling gene expression in the prostate and prostate cancer. 2. In collaboration efforts with other laboratories, projects concentrate on the usage of prostate-specific/tumor associated proteins as targets in conjunction with the utility of heat shock proteins for prostate cancer immunotherapy.

Z Cy Young Biography Denton True Young (March 29, 1867 - November 4, 1955) was the pre-eminent baseball pitcher during the 1890s and 1900s. His nickname "Cy" is short for "Cyclone," and was coined after a fence he threw at looked like it had sustained cyclone damage.
He was born in Gilmore, Ohio.
Young is generally considered one of the greatest pitchers of all time. Not only is he a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame (elected in 1937), but the Cy Young Award, the premier annual award given to the best major league pitchers in each league, is named in his honor.
Young set a career record for wins, 511, which will probably never be matched under the current conditions of the game. Current seasons produce just a few pitchers with more than 20 wins, at which pace a pitcher would have to pitch for more than 25 years to surpass the record.
Young began his major league career in 1890 with the Cleveland Spiders and achieved stardom rapidly. He was one of the few star hurlers to maintain his level of success after the pitching mound was moved back to its present 60 feet 6 inches in 1893. He maintained that level for over two decades, playing for the St. Louis Perfectos in 1899 and 1900 (by which time they had become the Cardinals) before jumping to the fledgling American League in 1902 with the Boston Pilgrims, for whom he played till 1908. He retired after the 1911 season, following 2 seasons with the Cleveland Naps and a year split between the Naps and the Boston Rustlers. His arm was as strong as ever, but, he told an interviewer, he couldn't field bunts as well as he once could, and "when the third baseman has to do my work for me, it's time to quit."

Encyclopedia Article Find in this article View printer-friendly page E-mail Young, Cy (1867-1955), American baseball player, whose memory inspired an award for the best major-league pitcher. He was born Denton True Young in Gilmore, Ohio . In 1890 he became a pitcher with the Cleveland club, then in the National League. Leaving the Cleveland team in 1898, he played for the St Louis Cardinals of the National League (1899-1900) and the Boston Red Sox of the American League (1901-1908). On May 5, 1904, Young became the first player in major league history to pitch a perfect game, that is, to allow no batters to reach first base. He retired from baseball in 1911, after playing two seasons for the Cleveland Indians of the American League and part of a season for the Boston Braves of the National League. He pitched in 906 games and won 511, the latter figure a major league record. In 1937 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame . In his honour, the Cy Young Award for the best major league pitcher of the year was established in 1956; since 1967 the award has been given to the best pitcher in each league.

This basketball season, worry about basketball. Not your sportsbook. Bodog is the safest and most secure sportsbook in the business. Bodog is the most trusted brand in online entertainment and we've got 12 years experience to prove it YOUNG, CY The number 511 doesn't have the same cachet as Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak or Mark McGwire's 70 home runs. It's not as much a symbol of endurance as Cal Ripken's newly minted 2,632. Nor does it quite get the juices flowing like Hank Aaron's 755 homers or Pete Rose's 4,256 hits. But in its way, the 511 victories of Cy Young might be the true Everest of all baseball records. Warren Spahn, the winningest pitcher since 1930, is 148 wins away. His 363 victories are just 71 percent of Young's total. Young also is the record-holder for most defeats (314), complete games (750), starts (815) and innings (7,357). His winning percentage of .619 is impressive and his lifetime earned run average is a healthy 2.63. He won more than 30 games five times and was a 20-game winner 15 times. It's no wonder that the annual award given to the best pitcher in each league is named after him.
