Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Elgin Baylor , born in 1934, American basketball player, one of the greatest forwards in the history of the game. Standing 6 ft 5 in (196 cm) tall, Baylor was one of the best rebounders ever and could score with a dazzling variety of acrobatic moves. Baylor’s career scoring average of 27.4 points per game, compiled from 1958 to 1971, remains among the top five in National Basketball Association (NBA) history. Baylor was born in Washington, D.C. Despite the fact that he did not play basketball until his early teens, in high school he became a star and earned All-American honors. A poor student, Baylor could not gain entrance into any major East Coast college. He received a scholarship from the College of Idaho in 1954 and played there for one year before transferring to Seattle University. After sitting out one season to regain his eligibility, Baylor emerged as one of the best college players in the country. He ranked among the top three players nationally in both scoring and rebounding his sophomore and junior years. As a junior he led Seattle to the 1958 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament championship game, where the Chieftains fell to the University of Kentucky.

Elgin Baylor played college basketball at Seattle University, leading the Chieftains to the NCAA Championship game in 1958 (where they lost to the Kentucky Wildcats. Following his junior season, Baylor joined the Minneapolis Lakers for the 1958-1959 season and moving with them to Los Angeles in 1960.
In 1959, Baylor was named the NBA Rookie of the Year and from the 1960-61 to the 1962-63 seasons, he averaged 34.8, 38.3 and 34.0 points per game, leading the Lakers to the NBA Finals eight times (although never winning). Baylor was a 10-time All-NBA First Team selection and went to the NBA All-Star Game 11 times.
Baylor began to be hampered with knee problems during the 1963-64 season and, while still a very powerful force, was never quite the same player, never averaging above 30 points per game again. During Baylor's career, the Lakers were a consistently powerful team, but were continuously overshadowed by the Boston Celtics dynasty of the time.
Baylor finally retired during the 1971-72 season because of his nagging knee problems and, ironically, the Lakers went on to win the NBA Championship that season, something that Baylor never achieved. He finished his career with an astonishing 23,149 points, 3,650 assists and 11,463 rebounds over 846 games.

Bodog is the most trusted brand in online entertainment and we've got 12 years experience to prove it BAYLOR, ELGIN It is possible that no forward ever performed with the offensive proficiency and flair that Elgin Baylor showed for the Lakers in the late 1950s and throughout the '60s. It just wasn't the number of points he scored; it was the way he got them, thrilling fans with the remarkable variety of his elegant actions.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Baylor was a rare combination of strength and grace, scoring either by powerful moves or acrobatic fakes. He would turn his back to his defender and begin a series of rhythmic dribbling feints from side to side, all the while sliding closer to the basket, protecting the ball with elbows and shoulders. Once inside, he would bull his way for a layup or, if his path was blocked, hang in the air seemingly longer than humanly possible before softly depositing the ball in the basket. Nor was Baylor just a scorer; his strength and timing enabled him to become one of the league's outstanding rebounders, too. Baylor was all-NBA first team in 10 of his first 11 seasons, including his first seven. He averaged more than 30 points three times and more than 20 eight other times. (Incredibly, he never led the league in scoring.) He averaged 27.4 points per game for his career, best ever for a forward and third highest all-time behind Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain. Baylor scored 71 points in a game, the only forward to get more than 65. He scored 61 in a playoff game, still a Finals record. (The only player who scored more in a playoff game was Jordan, but he needed two overtimes to reach his 63.)
