Z Julius Erving Biography Julius Erving (born February 22, 1950), commonly known by the nickname Dr. J, is an American basketball player who helped launch the modern style of play that emphasizes leaping ability and play above the rim.
Erving was also instrumental in bringing legitimacy to the now-defunct American Basketball Association. While some players are considered to be "the team", Dr. J. was considered "the league." He was the main asset of the ABA when it merged with the NBA after the 1976 season. He was named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time team.
Born in East Meadow, New York, Erving played college ball at the University of Massachusetts, where he was one of only six players in NCAA history to average more than 20 points and 20 rebounds per game.
He signed with the fledgling ABA in 1971, and played with the Virginia Squires from 1971-73 and the New York Nets from 1973-76. He then moved to the NBA, where he played with the Philadelphia 76ers until his retirement in 1987. He was named the NBA MVP in 1981, and led the 76ers to the NBA championship in 1983.
When he retired, Erving ranked in the top 10 in scoring (third), most field goals made (third), most field goals attempted (fifth) and most steals (first). On the combined NBA/ABA scoring list, Erving ranked third with 30,026 points.

As a young boy he grew up watching the Knickerbockers, and the Celtics, and instantly became a fan of both teams. Little did he know he’d become an enemy to both of those franchises.
In High School Erving was among the best players on the court, it was at this time he earned the nick name “The Doctor”. Erving was awarded a scholarship to the University of Massachusetts in 1968. While there he averaged 26 points and 20 boards for a career, and became one of only six players ever to accomplish this feat. Despite his stellar numbers Erving didn’t get much national attention, this could be because he failed to lead Umass to the national title game even once.
Erving left Umass in 1971 and began playing basketball professionally. Erving was drafted by the Virginia Squires of the ABA, the ABA or American Basketball Association was a league that was trying to compete with the NBA but in smaller market cities.
Earing quickly made his impact in the ABA felt. He averaged over 27 points a game, became an all-star, and was second in MVP voting behind Artis Gilmore. Erving lead the Squires to the ABA Eastern Finals where they lost to the New York Nets.

This basketball season, worry about basketball. Not your sportsbook. Bodog is the safest and most secure sportsbook in the business. Bodog is the most trusted brand in online entertainment and we've got 12 years experience to prove it ERVING, JULIUS "I'd go through the middle make the ball disappear, switch hands do something magical with it. The guy who was announcing the game kept calling me a lot of different nicknames, like Houdini or Little Hawk all kinds of stuff. So I said, if you're going to call me anything, just call me the Doctor." says Julius Erving on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. While others played the game of basketball on the ground, Julius Erving performed above it. When he went up in the air, he stayed there for long periods of time, seemingly an irresistible force of nature as he improvised some acrobatic maneuver. He pushed the envelope of physical probability, soaring to unprecedented heights with a basketball in his size 11 hands. While he scored 30,026 points as a pro, he probably drew at least double that number in oohs and ahs for his in-flight sessions. "No one has ever controlled and conquered the air above pro basketball like Julius Erving, the incomparable Dr. J," wrote Pete Axthelm in Newsweek. "The Doctor not only leaps and stays aloft longer than most players dream possible, but he uses his air time to transform his sport into graceful ballet, breath-taking drama or science-fiction fantasy depending upon his mood of the moment and the needs of his team."
