Maravich's creative artistry dazzled
By Bob Carter
Special to ESPN.com
"Pete Maravich was Showtime before there was Showtime. The only problem with Pete Maravich was the four other guys; he just didn't relate to the rest of the team. A team was Pete Maravich and anybody who was inbounding to him," says columnist Robert Lipsyte on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. The show. Pete Maravich lived for it. Basketball fans died to see it. While Pistol Pete is the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer, it was his game show that dazzled, as he displayed his creative genius, the kind of sleight-of-hand artistry that left crowds gasping. A skinny white guard from LSU, he was a Harlem Globetrotter in skill and spirit, if not uniform. Pete Maravich averaged 24.2 points during his 10 NBA seasons. Passes flew behind his back and backwards over his shoulder, eyes looking one way and the ball heading another. His deft dribble often twisted defenders onto their heels, the ball flashing smoothly between his legs, behind his back and through tight openings. Shots came from all angles and distances. "If I have a choice whether to do the show or throw a straight pass," said Maravich, a three-time All-American, "and we're going to get the basket either way, I'm going to do the show."

Pete Maravich
ज्ञानकोश: - The Indological Knowledgebase Pete Maravich June 22 January 5 ), known in the basketball world as Pistol Pete , was a legendary player who starred in college and for three NBA teams. Born in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania , Pete had seemed to marvel his family and friends with his basketball ability since he was little. His father Press Maravich , former player turned coach, showed Pete the fundamentals starting at age 7. Pete would spend hours practicing ball control tricks, passes, head fakes, and long range shots. He decided on the guard position, the only position he would ever play. He attended three high schools as a teen: Daniel High School in Clemson, South Carolina Needham Broughton in Raleigh, North Carolina , and Edward Military Institute in Salemburg, North Carolina . During his years at those schools, he wowed college scouts with his ability to play his favorite sport. And so, in , Pete decided to attend Louisiana State University , where his father was head basketball coach. This is where he, along with his trademark floppy gray socks, became legendary.

Pistol Pete Maravich
Mar 26th, 2006 by Don Ray I just watched a special on Pistol Pete Maravich. I had all but forgotten about him. He was probably the most entertaining basketball player I ever watched. He was a true magician on the court. It saddened me today to learn that one of the greatest players to ever play the game, lived so much of his life tormented and unhappy. I remember when he quit the game and I thought the game would never be the same again. I am glad to learn that before his death, he found the peace and serenity that he had missed for so much of his life. Born: June 27, 1947. Died: Jan. 5, 1988.
In my book, he was the greatest basketball player that ever played. Here are some links that provide information on Pistol Pete Maravich: http://www.nba.com/history/players/maravich_summary.html

THE SPORTS FAN'S GAME PLAN One of the items you found in the time capsule was a baseball bat signed by Joe Jackson. You need to discover some information about Joe Jackson and what made him so famous. Use the following questions as a guide, but do not limit your information to the answers to these questions. 1. When was he born? When did he die? What was his nickname and why was he called that? Name the movie in which this player "came back" to play in, after the line "If you build it, he will come." 2. Describe his involvement in the 1919 World Series Scandal. Do you feel that he deserved to be banned from baseball? Back up your answer with stats from the Series. 3. Discuss whether or not you feel that he belongs in The Baseball Hall of Fame. Once again, back up your answer with his lifetime statistics.
