Shaq should've thought before he spoke
By Bill Walton
Special to ESPN.com
How many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry? Although the comments have been reported before, the recent release of recordings of Shaquille O'Neal mocking, criticizing and generally disrespecting Yao Ming are startling. Being bigger than the other kids while growing up, Shaq knows what it's like to be different. How disappointing for Shaq he should know better. He's the leader of the NBA and you expect more from him. Can you imagine Bill Russell, Michael Jordan , Larry Bird, Magic, Hakeem or David Robinson saying anything like this?

Shaq says mock accent was used jokingly
Associated Press
A columnist for AsianWeek complained in his newspaper that O'Neal made several derogatory comments recently about Yao, with the Lakers' center saying, "Tell Yao Ming, 'ching-chong-yang-wah-ah-soh.'''
"I said it jokingly, so this guy was just trying to stir something up that's not there. He's just somebody who doesn't have a sense of humor, like I do. I don't have to have a response to that (the charges of racism) because the people who know me know I'm not,'' O'Neal said Friday before Los Angeles' game against Cleveland.
"I mean, if I was the first one to do it, and the only one to do it, I could see what they're talking about. But if I offended anybody, I apologize.''
"There are a lot of difficulties in two different cultures understanding each other. Especially two very large countries. The world is getting smaller and I think it's important to have a greater understanding of other cultures. I believe Shaquille O'Neal was joking but I think that a lot of Asian people don't understand that kind of joke,'' Yao said.

Walton played college basketball at UCLA from 1970 to 1974, including the national NCAA title in 1973 in a win over Memphis State in which Walton scored 21 of 22 shots. Some regard it as the greatest offensive performance ever in American college basketball.
Walton's professional career was cut short by foot and knee injuries, but he led the Portland Trail Blazers to the 1977 NBA championship and in 1986 he was a role player on the Boston Celtics when that team won the championship.
As of 2003, Walton is a basketball television analyst for ESPN. His son Luke currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. Bill Walton Resources Contact Us Sitemap

Source: ESPN Classic "One of the saddest days for Coach Wooden was the day he came down and had to bail me out of jail after I got arrested in the anti-Vietnam protest. He said, 'Bill, I know you feel very strongly about this, but I just don't think that you getting arrested and taking part in this demonstration is what it's all about," says Bill Walton on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Before the injuries hampered his professional career, Bill Walton dominated college basketball.
At UCLA in the early '70s, the 6-foot-11, 235-pound center was the linchpin of the Bruins winning an NCAA record 88 consecutive games. Walton didn't just play basketball; he understood the soul of the game. He learned about competition early, beginning at Blessed Sacrament Elementary School in La Mesa, a suburb of San Diego. A shy and nervous seventh grader who stuttered, Walton was in no hurry to leave the restroom before the tip-off of a local Catholic league championship game.

Although he was plagued by injuries during his NBA career, the 7-ft (2.1-m) Walton played on two championship teams. He helped the Portland Trail Blazers win the 1977 title and was a reserve player for the Boston Celtics when they captured the 1986 title. William Theodore Walton, III, was born in San Diego, California, and gained fame in the early 1970s as the star center for UCLA. Walton helped UCLA capture national championships in 1972 and 1973. The high point of his collegiate career came in the finals of the 1973 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament, when he scored 44 points to lead UCLA to its seventh consecutive national championship. That year Walton won the James E. Sullivan Memorial Award, given annually by the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States (AAU) to the outstanding amateur athlete in the country. The Trail Blazers selected the three-time All-American center in the first round of the 1974 NBA draft, and three seasons later, in 1977, he helped the team win its first NBA championship. During the 1977-78 season Walton averaged 18.9 points and 13.2 rebounds per game and was named the league’s most valuable player (MVP).

Salo didn't win any races but he made it to the podium twice and completed the Monaco Grand Prix in 1997 in a damaged car without stopping for refuelling which apparently is a rare feat. He is still racing and part-owns a cafe, nite club, sushi bar and restaurant complex in Helsinki while living in Monaco with Noriko and their two children, Max and Mai. Jack 10-11-2006, 04:03 AM

this is very disapointing to me. Shaqs apology "If i offended" is ridiculous. hes a disgrace to his ancestors who went through those same type of racial derogatory remarks. the fact that i can picture trent lott with shaq makes me sick. as a black person, i cannot believe he did this. how would he liked it if somehow yao said "when we meet bring the collard greens and watermelons"? or used the slave term "yes masum". shaq should know at his age chinese people were mocked by those "ching Chong" comments when they first moved here to america.the fact he doesn't shows how ignorant he is. anybody else who wants to talk on shaq, his racial motivated remarks, and fake apology, get your voice heard.
