Howe kept going and going and ...
By Larry Schwartz
Special to ESPN.com
"Dad's mind-set on the ice was different than most anybody else I've ever met. He can be cruel. I've seen him be vicious. I've seen him hurt people and I used to think, 'Wow, it's like he meant to do it,' " says Mark Howe about Gordie on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Gordie Howe won six MVP's and six scoring titles. Durability thy name is Gordie Howe. In his tenure as a professional hockey player, he skated right wing through the presidencies of Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. He outlasted the Energizer bunny, playing for a remarkable 32 years. At 51, when he should have been sipping beer on his front porch, he was still playing a regular shift in the NHL. Not even more than 300 stitches, damaged knee cartilages, broken ribs, a broken wrist, several broken toes, a dislocated shoulder, an assortment of scalp wounds, a painful ankle injury and a near-brush with death could derail his date with destiny. And to think, growing up he thought he "would have been happy to play just one season." Competing for as long as Howe did, one is bound to put up incredible numbers. His stats (World Hockey Association and playoff games included): 2,421 games, 1,071 goals, 1,518 assists, 2,589 points and 2,418 penalty minutes. He held NHL records of 801 goals (regular season) and 1,850 points until Wayne Gretzky came long. Besides Howe's endurance, there was the ability and determination that enabled him to win six MVP awards and six scoring championships with the Detroit Red Wings.

When you check the record books you won't find many players with more entries than Gordie Howe. Most seasons played, most games played, most games played including the playoffs are just a few of the records Howe still holds, and if you dig even deeper in the record books, you'll find that he holds the number two spot behind Gretzky in many other categories. It seemed, at least at the time, Howe was setting records that would not be broken for years to come. However, as we all know, records are made to be broken. Howe started his hockey career in Saskatoon as part of the Saskatoon Lions in 1943-44 season. That same year Howe attended his first NHL training camp with the New York Rangers in Winnipeg. But as a 15 year old he quickly grew homesick and left camp. The following year he played only the exhibition season with the Galt Red Wings. He attended the Detroit Red Wings training camp that season and was picked up by the Red Wings and sent down to the Omaha Knights of the USHL where Gordie scored nearly a point a game. The following season Howe was brought up, and the NHL and its followers began to witness one of the game's greatest players begin his career.

Gordie Howe
Born: March 31, 1928
Place of Birth: Floral, Saskatchewan
Major Notes:
  • The New York Rangers in 1943 turned down Howe, who was 15 at the time, at a hockey try-out because he was too "scrawny"
The next year, Howe tried out with Detroit and he was assigned to their franchise team.
He joined the Red Wings in 1946 when he was only 18 years old.
A remarkable player with a wrist shot of over 100 mph, Howe captured the scoring championship six times.
He was voted the Most Valuable Player in the league six times as well.
Because of his longevity, he was able at one time to play on a professional WHA team with his two sons!
Howe was a player with both offensive and defensive skills coupled with great skating ability.
Some fans suggested that Howe was sneaky in checking and he developed the nick name "Mr.Elbows".
He finished playing hockey at the age of 52; a record that probably will never be matched.
His teams won four Stanley Cups, emblematic of the league champions, and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972..
Howe played a remarkable 32 seasons of professional hockey.
