Pele Towers

The pele tower was a strongly built tower, less grand than a tower keep, used for a place of refuge and look-out. They were built between 1200-1700s or after, and sometimes are difficult to date. Most English pele towers were built in the 1500-1600s, while the Scottish ones were built in the 1600-1700s. There are around 78 surviving pele towers left in Wales, England, and Scotland. Pele is cognate with "pale" and means enclosure. The northern pele towers were surrounded by a simple enclosing stone wall, or barmkin, with no flanking towers or gatehouse. The entrance could be a simple break in the wall, or an arched doorway. Sometimes, pele towers were referred to as a "poormans castle". The reason for this is that ordinary people built peles to protect their goods and cattle. Pele towers were especially common in the border country between Scotland and England. Some pele towers were constructed quickly, and some were made of wood due to the lack of funding or wages. They were generally three storeys, but could be two or four storeys. Some had stone stairs leading up to upper levels, while others only had a wooden ladder. These could be lifted out of reach of attackers very quickly. The ground floors were often vaulted. Seven the number for Pele
(FIFA.com) Monday 17 December 2007 Print Email to a friend Share Having slipped on the Sele§ao shirt for the first time on 7 July 1957, Pele finally hung up his boots at the age of 37 in 1977. It therefore seems fitting that in 2007, 50 years after his international debut, the iconic former star is to receive the FIFA Presidential Award for his life's work. O Rei lives on in the collective memory for his ability to create, surprise and invent something new every time he made contact with the ball. As a fearsome goalscorer, visionary passer and born dribbler, Pele has spawned dreams in the minds of generation after generation. Brazil have come to represent the essence of the beautiful game, a reputation they owe to their illustrious No10, who set them on their way to their first ever triumph in the biggest tournament of all. Spotted at just 11 years of age by Brazil international Waldemar de Brito, Pele joined Santos at 15. A year later, on 7 July 1957, the youngster marked his first international appearance in the 2-1 defeat by Argentina by striking his first goal within the imposing surroundings of the gargantuan Maracana stadium. At the time, the Maracana faithful were still mourning the loss of the 1950 FIFA World Cup Final to Uruguay, but Pele soon made them forget that bitter setback with the skills that would lead the

Pele - Tale Of The Volcano Goddess Native Hawaiians knew all about volcanoes. According to them, volcanic eruptions were caused by Pele, the beautiful but tempestuous Goddess of Volcanoes. Pele had frequent moments of anger, which brought about eruptions. She was both honored and feared. She could cause earthquakes by stamping her feet or volcanic eruptions and fiery lava by digging with her Pa'oa, her magic stick. Pele had a long and bitter argument with her older sister, Namakaokahai. The fight ended up forming the Hawaiian Islands. Claim: Tourists who have taken rocks from Hawaiian beaches have returned them in hopes of ending streaks of bad luck.
Status: True.

[Collected on the Internet, 2001]
Hawaiian legend - anyone that removes a piece of rock from the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park will incur the wrath of the Godess Pele. Supposedly terrible curses follow those that do prompting them to soon abandon the rock(s) in interest of self-preservation.
Origins: Can a souvenir casually pocketed on a Hawaiian beach bring misfortune? Though the more skeptical will scoffingly dismiss the notion as pure hooey, thousands have come to believe that yes, volcanic rocks taken from Hawaii fetch with them a curse of impressive proportions. And the only way to undo the jinx is to return the purloined items whence they came.
Legend has it that Pele, goddess of fire and volcanoes, is so angered when the rocks (which she sees as her children) are taken from her that she exacts a terrible revenge on the thief. She is especially protective of volcanic rock and sand, two items tourists almost unthinkingly pocket as mementos of their vacations. After all, who would miss a rock?
Pele, apparently. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and far too many hotels to name receive a never-ending stream of packages containing sand, shells, and rocks from guilty-minded vacationers who are intent upon reversing their sudden downpours of bad luck. Many of these returns are accompanied by notes begging forgiveness of the goddess or detailing litanies of calamities that have befallen these casual purloiners:

56. The Pele Towers Of Cumbria
Determined to resist further invasion, the people of Cumberland and Westmorland built defensive structures known as pele towers, quite unique to the north
http://www.visitcumbria.com/pele.htm
The Pele Towers of Cumbria Of all the English monarchs, Edward I stands out in the troubled history of the Border region - he alone was determined to impose English rule on Scotland, and to this end made Carlisle an important military base, as well as a centre for government. Edward I fought a long and bitter campaign to conquer Scotland, and whilst preparing to subdue his enemy, Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland, died on the marshes at Burgh-by-Sands. A Monument reminds us of this. The Scots resisted these actions, and several marches were made with armies of 30000-40000 men, leaving death and destruction - farms and churches in the Lake District were destroyed, abbeys plundered and burned, people and cattle slaughtered. Determined to resist further invasion, the people of Cumberland and Westmorland built defensive structures known as pele towers, quite unique to the north of England. About 90 were built. They were small stone buildings with walls from 3 to 10 feet thick, square or oblong in shape. Most were on the outskirts of the Lake District, but a few were within its boundaries. Designed to withstand short sieges, they usually consisted of three storeys - a tunnel-vaulted ground floor which had no windows which was used as a storage area, and which could accommodate animals. The first floor contained a hall and kitchen, and the top floor was space for living and sleeping. The battlemented roof was normally flat for look-out purposes, and to allow arrows to be fired at raiders, and missiles hurled down on unwanted visitors.

El Pele Male flamenco singer Name: Manuel Moreno Maya Birth: 1954 C³rdoba
"He has a warm voice like old copper, and a refined instinct for the meter". Agustn G³mez, critic and flamencologist. In El Pele's family there were never any flamenco professionals, but there were great amateurs who were able to arouse the artistry that he had within him. He is another one of the artists who have been able to innovate starting from a perfect mastery of orthodox singing, and without ever losing these roots, bringing flamenco closer to several other kinds of music from around the world.
In his beginnings, he roamed the streets singing in them, in the tablaos and in fairs to bring some money home. In this environment, it was El Cordob©s, the bullfighter, who gave him the artistic name by which he is known. Precociously, when he was only fifteen years old, he won the Primer Premio Cayetano Muriel (1969) (Cayetano Muriel First Prize) and, a few more years later, in 1983, he was awarded two prizes in the Concurso Nacional de C³rdoba: the "La Serneta" award for soleares and the "Pastora Pav³n" award for buleras. From this moment onwards, El Pele's reputation travelled beyond his local area, and he started to become one of the best cantaores, thanks to his ability to innovate, his mastery of all the palos (forms), both festive and solemn, and his "magnificent vocal chords made of excellent flamenco metal" (Jos© Manuel Gamboa).

"Legend has it that the great Tengger Crater was dug out with just half a coconut shell by an ogre smitten with love for a princess. When the king saw that the ogre might fulfill the task he had set, which was to be completed in a single night, he ordered his servants to pound rice. This caused the cocks to start crowing, thinking the dawn had broken. The coconut that the ogre flung away became Gunung Batok, and the trench became the Sand Sea - and the ogre died of exhaustion."
