Born in Barendrecht, De Bruijn started swimming at the age of 13. After finishing 9th in the 100 m butterfly at the 1992 Olympic Games, she withdrew from the Dutch squad for the 1996 Games, citing a lack of motivation. She gave up the sport for a brief period before changing coaches in 1997 and adopting a new training regimen. Her subsequent turnaround in fortunes began at the 1998 Goodwill Games, where she broke the European record for the 50 m freestyle. This was followed by success at the 1999 European Championships, where she gained two gold medals (50 m freestyle and 100 m butterfly) and a silver medal (100 m freestyle), setting a European record in the butterfly final. These achievements were then bettered in an eight-week period beginning in late May 1999, when she broke, or equalled, eight world records. These included the 50 m freestyleâwhich she broke twice in a weekâ100 m freestyle, 50 m butterfly, and 100 m butterfly. De Bruijn became the first woman to set a time of under 54 seconds in the 100 m freestyle while her 100 m butterfly mark was over a second faster than the old record. She attributed these successes to her new coach, as well as the bodysuit she wore in competition, despite accusations from some quarters that the improvement owed more to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. | |
