Born in V¤stervik, Sweden , Edberg began playing tennis as a young boy and left school at 16 to concentrate on the game. In 1983 he became the first to win the juniors' Grand Slam (Wimbledon and the Australian, French, and US Opens). In 1985 he won his first professional Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open. The next time the tournament was held, in 1987, he was again champion. He also played frequently in Sweden's successful Davis Cup team, winning the trophy in 1984, 1985, and 1994.

Stefan Edberg won 41 career singles titles and 18 career doubles titles. He captured 6 Grand Slam singles titles - 2 Australian Open Championships (1985, '87 - the last man to win on Australian grass), 2 Wimbledon Championships (1988, '90) and 2 US Open Championships (1991, '92). Edberg also won the 1996 Australian Open Doubles title (with Petr Korda), and captured the 1987 Australian and US Open Doubles Championships (both with Anders Jarryd).

Edberg wurde als Sohn eines Polizisten in V¤stervik geboren und begann als Siebenj¤hriger mit dem Tennissport. Im Alter von elf Jahren gewann er das bedeutendste Jugendturnier seines Landes, 1980 und 1982 holte er sich den Titel eines Junioreneuropameisters. Nachdem er 16-j¤hrig ins Profilager gewechselt war, schaffte er 1983 den „Grand Slam der Junioren” durch Siege bei den Juniorenturnieren von Melbourne, Paris, Wimbledon und Flushing Meadow innerhalb eines Jahres. 1984 gewann Edberg in Mailand sein erstes Grand-Prix-Turnier. Bei den Olympischen Spielen 1984 in Los Angeles gewann er den Demonstrationswettbewerb.
