Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Martina Navratilova Biography Martina Navratilova (born October 18, 1956) is a successful Czech-born American tennis player. She played on the WTA Tour, competing in the singles from 1973 until 1994. She won 18 major singles titles from 1978-1990 (including nine at Wimbledon including six in a row 1982-1987), 167 singles tournaments and 174 doubles tournaments including 31 in the major competitions.
She was born in Prague and grew up in the Krkonose region. When her parents separated she went with her mother to Revnice where she became interested in tennis. Her mother re-married in 1962 and her stepfather, Mirek Navratil, became her first coach. She played in her first junior tournament in 1964 and began working with George Parma. She became a professional player in 1973, reaching the quarter-finals of her first Grand Slam event. In September 1975 she took up permanent residence in the US after the tournament in New York City (she became a US citizen in 1981).
Initially unsuccessful it was not until 1978 that she won her first major title, beating Chris Evert to win the Wimbeldon women's singles. A rigorous training regime finally showed its worth from 1982 when she won fifteen singles tournaments and fourteen doubles in that year and 28 in the following year, just missing a singles Grand Slam. She had an extended and fiercely competitive on-court rivalry with Chris Evert, a clash of contrasting styles that lasted until Evert retired in 1988.

Navratilova, Martina Navratilova, Martina (1956- ), Czech-American tennis player, who holds the women's all-time record for singles championships. She was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now in the Czech Republic). Navratilova was the national champion in her native country (1972-1975) and won the Junior Girls Championship at Wimbledon (1973). By the end of 1974 she had played in the singles finals of seven major tournaments and, with Chris Evert as her partner, had won four doubles championships. Frustrated by the Czechoslovakian Tennis Federation's interference with her career, Navratilova defected to the United States in 1975 and quickly became a leading money-maker on the Virginia Slims circuit. In 1976, again with Evert, she won the Wimbledon doubles championship. An exceptionally strong left-hander who operated from the baseline, Navratilova won the official women's tour and the Wimbledon championship in 1978 and again in 1979, when she finished the year as the world's top-ranked women's tennis player. From 1982 to 1987 she held the top ranking for all but 22 weeks of a 282-week stretch. She dominated Wimbledon from 1982 to 1987, winning six consecutive singles titles, and won again in 1990; she won the US Open singles championship four times (1983, 1984, 1986, 1987). Her other major singles titles include the French Open (1982, 1984) and the Australian Open (1981, 1983, 1985). Navratilova also won fame for her doubles play, winning ten US Open, eight Australian Open, seven French Open, and six Wimbledon titles with various partners.

"I think people thought of her as a villain because physically she was so strong. There's Chrissy and Tracy Austin and Evonne Goolagong and then along comes Martina, who's working out and there's veins popping out of her arms and who's really strong. And people were taken back. They were intimidated by this. But she's a kitten," says Chris Evert about Martina Navratilova on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series.
