Z John Adams Biography John Adams (October 30, 1735 - July 4, 1826) was the first (1789-1797) Vice President of the United States, and the second (1797-1801) President of the United States. His son, John Quincy Adams, was the sixth President of the United States (1825-1829).
Biography
Adams was born on October 30, 1735 in what is now the town of Quincy, Massachusetts. His father, a farmer, also named John, was a fourth generation descendant of Henry Adams, who emigrated from Devon, England, to Massachusetts about 1636; his mother was Susanna Boylston Adams.
Young Adams graduated from Harvard College in 1755, and for a time taught school at Worcester and studied law in the office of Rufus Putnam. In 1758, he was admitted to the bar. From an early age he developed the habit of writing descriptions of events and impressions of men. The earliest of these is his report of the argument of James Otis in the superior court of Massachusetts as to the constitutionality of Writs of Assistance. This was in 1761, and the argument inspired him with zeal for the cause of the American colonies. Years later, when he was an old man, Adams undertook to write out, at length, his recollections of this scene; it is instructive to compare the two accounts.
John Adams (http://www.usa-presidents.info/adams.htm) had none of the qualities of popular leadership which were so marked a characteristic of his second cousin, Samuel Adams; it was rather as a constitutional lawyer that he influenced the course of events. He was impetuous, intense and often vehement, unflinchingly courageous, devoted with his whole soul to the cause he had espoused; but his vanity, his pride of opinion and his inborn contentiousness were serious handicaps to him in his political career. These qualities were particularly manifested at a later period-as, for example, during his term as president.

Austin360: Steve Reich SxSW Showcase "A Hit"
Steve Reich's music was a focal point of the South by Southwest festival's first-ever classical music showcase, , Wednesday night. 's local music-scene blog, "Music Source," says it was "a hit." Randy Harriman reports from the show that the packed house "responded enthusiastically." The first half of the program included John Adams 's Road Movies ; works by Michael Torke and Elliott Carter; and Reich's New York Counterpoint , performed by the San Antonio-based SOLI chamber ensemble. The second half was devoted entirely to Reich's music, with a performance of Electric Counterpoint by guitarist C. E. Whalen and four pieces played by New York's So Percussion ensemble: Music for Pieces of Wood Nagoya Marimbas Drumming , and Clapping Music . Writes Harriman: The highlights of the evening had to be the Reich pieces played by So Percussion. Who would have thought that sticks and human hands could move at the speed of hummingbird wings-literally turning into blurs, from which emerged amazing sounds? To read the full report, visit

Printer-friendly version of section Adams, John (1735-1826), second president (1797-1801) and first vice-president (1789-1797) of the United States, and leader in the movement for independence. His presidency was marked by rivalry with fellow-Federalist Alexander Hamilton , controversy over government measures taken to curb political opposition, and a crisis in US relations with France. Adams was born on October 30, 1735, in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts, a town in which Adamses had lived since 1638. His father had married into a wealthy Boston family, the Boylstons, and was thus able to send his son to Harvard College, from which young Adams graduated in 1755. He then selected law and soon found that in the courtroom his acquired erudition and intellectual precision overcame his natural timidity, and he became a powerful speaker and an adroit advocate. At the age of 29 Adams married Abigail Smith, a woman who was clearly his intellectual and psychological equal.
