Rent References
This document is an attempt to explain some of the references in Rent 's song "La Vie Boheme" ("the bohemian life"). Many of the references were familiar to me, but some were unknown. I did some research on the Web into many of the names, known and unknown, and my findings are listed here. I have no insight into Jonathan Larson's ( Rent 's author) intent, and so the following descriptions are completely of my opinion.
Curry Vindaloo
Specialties of central and southwestern coastal India, vindaloos are the most mouth-searing of the curry dishes. The complicated roasted spice blend on which they're based can contain any of various ingredients including mustard seeds, cumin seeds, ginger, peppercorns, fenugreek seeds, cloves and coriander seeds. Red chiles are a must and tamarind concentrate is favored. Vindaloo sauce is typically combined with meat and served with rice. Premade vindaloo pastes and dried spice blends are available in Indian markets. [From THE FOOD LOVER'S COMPANION, 2nd edition, by Sharon Tyler Herbst, Barron's Educational Services, Inc.]

This coming-of-age story brings us from the time she was around three until she was sixteen and a mother. Her grandmother was a very important part of her life and her upbringing, raising Maya (Marguerite) and her brother, Bailey, in Stamps, Arkansas, in the Negro part of town. Despite her security in her grandmother’s house, she couldn’t help but be aware of larger, prejudicial and dangerous forces around her. And when she was raped in her mother’s house, she learned that danger can come from any source. (SEE ALSO the movie of the same name.)

Maya Angelou
Novelist, Poet Born Marguerite Johnson, Maya Angelou spent her formative years shuttling between St. Louis, Missouri, a tiny, totally segregated town in Arkansas, and San Francisco. Angelou claims that her grandmother, whom she called "momma, had a deep-brooding love that hung over everything she touched." Growing up in Stamps, Angelou learned what it was like to be a black girl in a world whose boundaries were set by whites. She learned what it meant to have to wear old hand me downs from a white woman. And she also learned the humiliation of being refused treatment by a white dentist. As a child she always dreamed of waking to find her "nappy black hair" metamorphosed to a long blond bob because she felt life was better for a white girl than for a black girl. Despite the odds, her grandmother instilled pride in Angelou with religion as an important element in their home.
During the 1950s, she studied dancing with Pearl Primus in New York, later appearing as a nightclub singer in New York and San Francisco. She worked as an editor for

Macbeth at first is the protagonist of the play and the reader wants him to be king. Shakespeare, creates a character that the audience wants to see as king and wants him to achieve greatness, this goes with the people that surround Macbeth. However, Macbeth does something that the audience would not suspect from their first impressions of him, he kills King Duncan. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are like the witch that gives the apple to Snow White. King Duncan being Snow White and the Macbeth family still tries to ask the mirror is they are the fairest of the land. The mirror in return tells them no. This guilt drives them to insanity and causes them more problems than they wanted. This example of the contrast that happens in Macbeth is that the Macbeth family was to be the family that lives on the corner with a white picket fence around their yard, the perfect family with so much going towards them, but because of greed it corrupts him and the white picket fence turns brown, and poison ivy grows upon it.
