Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Jean Anouilh (1910-1987), French playwright, director, and producer, known for well-crafted and provocative plays. Born near Bordeaux, Anouilh spent most of his life immersed in the theater world of Paris. After studying law and working briefly at an advertising agency, in 1931 he became secretary to actor, director, and producer Louis Jouvet. Anouilh’s first plays, written during the 1930s, were strongly influenced by the theatrical performance styles embraced by Jouvet and by Jacques Copeau, an experimental director and producer. During and after World War II (1939-1945), Anouilh wrote plays praised for their theatrical virtuosity, although some critics felt they lacked substance. After 1948 he worked closely with director Roland Pi¨tri, with whom he codirected several of his own plays. In later years he adapted the works of others for the stage and worked on a number of motion-picture scripts.

A nouilh's collected works are color titled after the dominant mood of each. His two collections of pieces noires, or black plays, include Eurydice (1941), which is a modernization of the Orpheus legend, and Antigone (1944), an immensely popular and frequently performed modernization of Sophocles' play set in World War II France. It stresses the grim choice between practical compromise and unbending idealism. Anouilh, Jean Anouilh, Jean (1910-1987), French playwright, born in Bordeaux. During the German occupation of France in World War II, he wrote Antigone (1942; trans. 1946), an adaptation of the Greek legend of the daughter of Oedipus. His early plays are essentially pessimistic in tone, with suicide a frequent theme. His later plays are less sardonic and reflect a highly developed skill in dramatic construction and dialogue. Among his plays are L'Invitation au Ch¢teau (1947), which was presented in New York in 1950 as Ring 'Round the Moon; The Waltz of the Toreadors (1951; trans. 1956), which was selected the best foreign play of 1956-1957 by the New York Drama Critics' Circle and produced as a film in 1962; L'Alouette (1953; The Lark, 1955); Becket (1960), produced as a film in 1964; Dear Antoine or The Love that Failed (1969; trans. 1971); and Ornifle (1970; trans. 1970). Anouilh, Jean
