Boiardo's popular translation of Apuleius' Metamorphoses (also known as The Golden Ass ), which originated in the Ferrarese court in the 1470s at the request of Ercole I d'Este, was only supplanted in 1549, when a new translation by Agnolo Firenzuola appeared.

APULEIUS' COMMENTARY ON THE PERIHERMANEIAS Main The following text is work in progress on Apuleius' commentary on Aristotle's Perihermaneias . The commentary is attributed to Apuleius of Madaura, a second century Roman writer, born in Numidia, Africa. He is well known for his novel The Golden Ass , a satirical fantasy that contains the story of Cupid and Psyche. The Latin text is based on the edition by by Moreschini (Teubner 1991, 189-215), downloaded from Peter King's excellent website . I am in the process of matching it to an electronic version of a text from the Schoenberg collection (see here , a manuscript from the great abbey of Fleury, from around the tenth century. The manuscript is also of extreme rarity and fact survives in only two other manuscripts from the abbey, one of the early ninth century (Orléans ms. 277, pp. 1-55) and the other of around the year 1000 (B.N. ms. Lat. 6638). Schoenberg says that 'Probably these two represent the exemplar and a copy of the present manuscript'. For details of the manuscript itself, see here So far (May 2007) I have paginated the text (using the Moreschini edition as a guide) in line with the manuscript, inserted line breaks in the right place, and put links to the right pages in the Schoenberg collection. Next, I will correct the considerable differences between the two versions, and to translate the Latin.

APULEIUS OF MADAUROS by KERROUCHE Lyes
Tuesday, 27. November 2007, 00:32:49 APULEIUS OF MADAUROS Amazigh Philosopher and World Advocate (c. 124 - c. 180 AD) Lucius Apuleius is known as the author of several prose masterpieces written in Latin. Apuleius of Madaurus wrote in the language of the Roman conquerors of North Africa. However, Apuleius was not a Roman. He was a native of North Africa and proud of it. Little has been made of his "Berber" origins, and the fact that he was not Roman by birth. Apuleius was strictly a citizen of Rome due to the fact that his ancestral land was then a Roman colony, and Roman citizenship had been granted to the inhabitants of the colony of Madauros. hello The Berber

    Herbarium Of Apuleius Platonicus
( Originally Published 1912 ) Another very early book based on classical writings, especially those of Dioscorides and Pliny, was the ` Herbarium' of Apuleius Platonicus. This little Latin work is among the earliest to which the term " Herbal" is generally applied. A herbal has been defined as a book containing the names and descriptions of herbs, or of plants in general, with their properties and virtues. The word is believed to have been derived from a mediaeval Latin adjective " her-balls," the substantive "liber" being understood. It is thus exactly comparable in origin with the word " manual " in the sense of a hand-book. Four early printed editions of the Herbal of Apuleius Platonicus are known, all of which appear to have been based on different manuscripts. The earliest was published in Rome late in the fifteenth century, from a manuscript discovered by Joh. Philippus de Lignamine, physician to Pope Sixtus IV. Nothing is definitely known concerning the author, but it is conjectured that he was a native of Africa, and that his book may date from the fifth century, or possibly even the fourth. The work undoubtedly had a career of many centuries in manuscript before it was printed. Various extant manuscripts of the Herbarium are illustrated with coloured drawings of the crudest description, which are found on comparison to be identical in many different examples, and to have been reproduced, in a degraded form, when the book was printed. The original figures, from which the drawings in the different manuscripts were copied, must date back to very early times. They probably represent, as Dr Payne has pointed out, a school of botanical draughtsmanship derived from late Roman art.

Lucius Apuleius The influence of Lucius Apuleius (c. 124-170) on the development of Western prose fiction can not be overestimated. His Metamorphoses, the only surviving novel in Latin, has provided a model stylistically, thematically, and structurally, for many of the great writers of Europe and America.
