It is of course a great honor to have a Chair in Canadian Studies named in part after me, here, at the University of Mexico — in a country and in a city so rich in culture and in history — and it’s an equally great honor to have my own name joined in this way with that of the eminent francophone Canadian writer, Gabrielle Roy. This sort of honor was unimaginable to when I was younger: we didn’t really have Canadian writers then, or we did have a few of them, but we didn’t know very much about them. Gabrielle Roy was an exception. I never met her — she was of a generation of writers before mine, and her work is set in the thirties and forties — but I certainly read her, at an early age. At first it seems to be a smeared print: blurred lines and grey flecks blended with the paper; then, as you scan it, you see in the left-hand corner a thing that is like a branch: part of a tree (balsam or spruce) emerging and, to the right, halfway up what ought to be a gentle slope, a small frame house. In the background there is a lake, and beyond that, some low hills. (The photograph was taken the day after I drowned. I am in the lake, in the center of the picture, just under the surface. It is difficult to say where precisely, or to say how large or small I am: the effect of water on light is a distortion but if you look long enough, eventually you will be able to see me.) Born in Ottawa, she moved briefly to Sault Ste Marie and then settled in Toronto following WWII. Her formative education reflects an immersion in her father's vocation as an entomologist specializing in forest insects. She graduated from Victoria College, University of Toronto in 1961 and received an M.A. degree from Radcliffe College, Harvard in 1962. Although she did some teaching and residencies in Canadian universities in the 1960s and early 1970s, her success as a novelist allowed her to devote herself to writing full-time after the publication of her second novel Surfacing (1972).
