Augustine was born in 354 in Tagaste, a provincial Roman city in North Africa. He was raised and educated in Carthage. His mother Monica was a devout Christian and his father Patricius a pagan. As a youth Augustine followed the unpopular Manichaean religion, much to the horror of his mother. In Carthage, he developed a relationship with a young woman who would be his concubine for over a decade and produce a son. His education and early career was in philosophy and rhetoric, the art of persuasion and public speaking. He taught in Tagaste and Carthage, but soon aspired to compete with the best, in Rome. However, Augustine grew disappointed with the Roman schools, which he found apathetic. Manichaean friends introduced him to the prefect of the City of Rome, Symmachus, who had been asked to provide a professor of rhetoric for the imperial court at Milan.

Augustine_of_Hippo.jpg St. Augustine of Hippo Aurelius Augustinus Augustine of Hippo ) is a saint and the pre-eminent Doctor of the Church according to Roman Catholicism ; he was the eldest son of Saint Monica . In the Eastern Orthodox Church, which does not accept all of his teachings, he is usually called "Blessed Augustine." Many Protestants also consider him to be a spiritual ancestor of Protestantism , in the sense that Protestantism's founder Martin Luther was deeply influenced by him (Luther was trained as an Augustinian monk), and in Protestantism's general focus, following Augustine, on original sin which leads to a more realistic (though critics would say pessimistic) assessment of human reason and action apart from divine grace. A Jewish transfer student from Montreal, he considers himself to be a spiritual seeker, as well as being indie but not hipsterish. Although he badly wants Eupheme to offer him acceptance, debauchery at wild parties, and deep spiritual experiences (in about that order), he is socially awkward and prone to feeling guilty as soon as the party gets going. His mother, Monica, is your typical "cool mom", a trendster who dabbled in both hippiedom and faux-punk before settling into a comfortable New Age niche; she is a devoted Buddhist. Austin's father, Pat Goldberg, is a bombastic and argumentative man who desires grandeur and fame for his only son. Goldberg is the second version of Augustine to appear at Eupheme.

These two paragraphs are excerpted from the fifth chapter of Augustine's Treatise on Faith and the Creed. In section 11 Augustine addresses the Passion and burial of Christ, and in 12 the Resurrection, relating that event to the adoption that all humankind is offered in Christ.
A Treatise on Faith and the Creed, ch. 5: On the Passion, Burial and Resurrection 11. But comparatively little was the humiliation ( humilitas ) of our Lord on our behalf in His being born: it was also added that He deemed it meet to die in behalf of mortal men. For 'He humbled Himself, being made subject even unto death, yea, the death of the cross', lest any one of us, even were he able to have no fear of death in general, should yet shudder at some particular sort of death which men reckon most shameful. Therefore do we believe in Him who under Pontius Pilate was crucified and buried . For it was requisite that the name of the judge should be added, with a view to the cognizance of the times. Moreover, when that burial is made an object of belief, there enters also the recollection of the new tomb, which was meant to present a testimony to Him in His destiny to rise again to newness of life, even as the Virgin's womb did the same to Him in His appointment to be born. For just as in that sepulchre no other dead person was buried, whether before or after Him, so neither in that womb, whether before or after, was anything mortal conceived.
