edit Humble beginnings
Beaumarchais was born Pierre-Augustin Caron, the only boy among the six children of a watchmaker. The family was comfortable and Caron had a peaceful and happy childhood in contrast to his adult life. Caron left school at the age of 13 to apprentice under his father. A few years later, possibly between 1751 to 1753, he invented an escape mechanism for watches, that allowed them to be made substantially more accurate and compact than watches made up to this point. One of his greatest feats was a watch mounted on a ring, made for Madame de Pompadour , a mistress of Louis XV . The invention was later recognised by the Acad©mie des sciences , but only after a tussle with M. Lepaute, the royal watchmaker, who attempted to pass off the invention as his own [3].

PIERRE AUGUSTIN CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS
This article was originally published in Encyclopedia Britannica, Eleventh Edition, Volume III . Anonymous. Cambridge: University Press, 1910. pp. 589-90.
BEAUMARCHAIS, PIERRE AUGUSTIN CARON DE (1732-1799), French dramatist, was born in Paris on January 24, 1732. His father, a watchmaker named Caron, brought him up to the same trade. He was an unusually precocious and lively boy, shrewd, sagacious, passionately fond of music and imbued with a strong desire for rising in the world. At the age of twenty-one he invented a new escapement for watches, which was pirated by a rival maker. Young Caron at once published his grievance in the Mercure , and had the matter referred to the Academy of Sciences, which decided in his favour. This affair brought him into notice at court; he was appointed, or at least called himself, watchmaker to the king, who ordered from him a watch similar to the one he had made for Mme de Pompadour. His handsome figure and cool assurance enabled him to make his way at court. Mme Franquet, the wife of an old court official, persuaded her husband to make over his office to young Caron, and, on her husband's death, a few months later, married the handsome watchmaker. Caron at the same time assumed the name Beaumarchais; and four years later, by purchasing the office of secretary to the king obtained a patent of nobility. Goethe 's Clavigo , for Beaumarchais did not pursue his vengeance beyond words. Beaumarchais made his first essay as a writer for the stage with the sentimental drama

Pierre de Beaumarchais (1732-1799) French playwright and adventurer, whose best known comedies are The Barber of Seville (1775) and The Marriage of Figaro (1784). The plays inspired two famous operas, the first composed by Gioachhino Rossini, and the second by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Beaumarchais was one of the most colorful characters of the old Regime, who earned and lost fortunes, served as a secret agent in Britain, and supplied guns to the American revolutionaries. Although he supported the French Revolution, he was forced to go into exile. "No, Monsieur le Comte, you shan't have her! You shan't have her. Because you are a great noble, you think you are a great genius! Nobility, a fortune, a rank, appointments to office: all this makes a man so proud! What did you do to earn all this? You took the trouble to get born - nothing more. Moreover, you're really a pretty ordinary fellow. While as for me, lost in the crowd, I've had to use more knowledge, more brains, just to keep alive than your likes have to spend on governing Spain and the Empire for a century. And you want to contest with me - ..." (from The Marriage of Figaro France joined the American War of Independence against Britain officially in 1778, but Beaumarchais had already supplied arms to the American colonies. He also organized a fleet of merchant ships to carry cannons, ammunition and other equipment and assist the Continental Congress. In exchange for the war supplies the agent of Congress promised to send back produce, chiefly tobacco, as compensation of the debt. 40 years later Beaumarchais's daughter still waited for the compensation, which was about 2 million francs. Congress replied: "Take one third or nothing."

BEAUMARCHAIS AND MOZART
by John H. Lienhard
Click here for audio of Episode 588. Today, you will go dancing, but genius will play the tune. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. M ozart wrote The Marriage of Figaro for a new market for the public subscription concert. He was an early pioneer of listener-supported music. You couldn't be very radical when you wrote for royal patrons. Here you had means for taking your case to the people. It was 1786. Revolution was afoot. Mozart's librettist adapted The Marriage from a play by a French clockmaker, born Pierre Caron. When he was only 19, Caron invented a fine new clock escapement mechanism. That earned him enough money to run with the rich. He married a wealthy widow. He took the fancy name of Beaumarchais. By the age of 27, he was teaching harp to Louis XV's daughters. He had a nose for court intrigue. He soon gained the title of Count Beaumarchais. He moved from mechanics to music to social climbing. Then he took up play-writing. And his plays supported the cause of revolution from inside the palace walls.

Fodor's Review: This bold hotel serves as a gateway to the hip student and artist neighborhood of Oberkampf and the 11e and 20e arrondissements. Brightly colored vinyl armchairs, an industrial metal staircase, and glass tables mark the lobby. Out back a small courtyard is decked in hardwood, a look you'll rarely see in Paris. The rooms hum with primary reds and yellows, some with Keith Haring prints. Pierre-Augustin Caron was born in Paris, the son of a watchmaker. Initially, Pierre followed in his father's trade, and exhibited a talent not only with mechanical objects, but in the fields of music and writing. He taught the harp to the daughters of the French king Louis XV, which introduced him to the high society of Paris. Talented and handsome, Pierre became notoriously popular with women. By marrying in succession two wealthy widows and pursuing his own commercial activities, he acquired considerable financial means. He wrote successful theater pieces and engaged in other literary activities. His comedy The Barbarer of Seville was shown in 1775, and was a popular success with the broad public, if not all of the nobility. With his money and social connections, Pierre Caron was able to assume the name ‘de Beaumarchais' in 1756.
Despite his rather irregular background [or maybe because of it] the French foreign minister, Vergennes, turned to Beaumarchais to conduct a series of secret dealings in arranging for French support to the colonial rebels at the outset of the American Revolution. There is some speculation that Beaumarchais had eariler performed a secret mission in London for Louis XV and Mme Du Berry in 1774. However, the scheme set up in 1776 to support the American cause was quite elaborate.
To provide cover for his operations, Beaumarchais followed a pattern of deception already being undertaken by the French. Beaumarchais set up a fictitious firm using a Spanish name:

Hardly known today except among certain scholars of French culture, Beaumarchais nevertheless created some of the best-known characters in world literature, above all the barber Figaro, who like Homer's Odysseus is never at a loss no matter how daunting the circumstances. The same could said of Figaro's creator, as the epigraph to Hugh Thomas'

Built in the 18th century, this good-value choice features floors of artfully worn gray stone, antique reproductions, and elaborate fabrics based on antique patterns. Hotelier Alain Bigeard intends his primrose-colored guest rooms to evoke the taste of the French gentry in the 18th century, when the Marais was the scene of high-society dances or even duels.
