Z John Berryman Biography John Berryman (originally John Smith) (1914-January 7, 1972) was an American poet, born in McAlester, Oklahoma. He was a major figure in American poetry in the second half of the 20th century and often considered one of the founders of the Confessional school of poetry. He is one of the figures acting as a bridge between the formally loose, socially aware poetry of the Beats and the personal, grieving poetry of Sylvia Plath. He was the author of The Dream Songs, which are both playful, witty, and morbid. Berryman died by suicide in 1972.
Although Berryman published poems and achieved recognition early, his first major work was Homage to Mistress Bradstreet in 1956. However, it was the collection of Dream Songs that gathered him the most admiration. The first volume, entitled 77 Dream Songs, was published in 1964 and won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. The second volume of Dream Songs, entitled His Toy, His Dream, His Rest, appeared in 1968. The two volumes of Dream Songs were published together as The Dream Songs in 1969.
The Dream Songs are eighteen-line poems in three stanzas. Each individual poem is lyric and organized around an emotion provoked by an everyday event. The tone of the poems is less surreal than associational or intoxicated, and yet each is carefully constructed, with a great deal of control of both wording and thought hidden beneath an apparent randomness. The poems appear to be nearly diary entries, and yet they are neither trivial nor occasional. The principal character of the song cycle is Henry, who is both the narrator of the poems and referred to by the narrator in the poems. Henry often speaks to himself in the guise of Mr. Bones, a blackface minstrel show version of himself. Because readers assumed that Henry, the narrator, and Mr. Bones were all the poet speaking directly of himself, Berryman's poetry was considered part of the Confessional Poetry movement. Berryman, however, scorned the idea that he was a Confessional poet.

Berryman, John Berryman, John (1914-1972), distinguished American poet, writer, and critic. Born John Smith in McAlester, Oklahoma, his early life was dominated by the suicide of his father who shot himself when John was 11 years old. A few weeks later Berryman's mother married a neighbour, John Angus Berryman, and both the poet and his brother took their stepfather's name. The sudden and violent loss of his father haunted Berryman throughout his life and is a recurrent theme in his poetry. In 1972, after a life-long battle with depression and alcoholism, Berryman leapt to his death from the Washington Bridge, Minneapolis. Educated at Columbia University, where he studied under Mark Van Doren, and then at Clare College, Cambridge, Berryman began to publish poems in small magazines in the late 1930s. In 1940, after an appointment as Instructor in English at Harvard, Berryman was included in the collection

John Berryman (1914-1972)
At an early age Berryman's childhood was scarred by his father's suicide in Florida after a quarrel with his mother, and his own turbulent life - much of it spent battling alcoholism - ended when he threw himself from a bridge in Minneapolis in 1972. His poetry is colloquial, erudite, witty, lyrical and intensely confessional - the poet's own neuroses and insecurities are scarcely far from the view. Robert Lowell once described Berryman's verse as "more tearful and funny than we can easily bear." In his best-known work the Dream Songs sequence, Berryman speaks, using an array of first, second and third person voices, through the persona of Henry, a modern-day bar-room Hamlet struggling to cope with his own sorry existence. By 1972 it was a struggle Berryman himself was no longer able to continue.

John Berryman was an American poet and winner of the Bollingen Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, and the National Book Award. "His poems, especially Homage to Mistress Bradstreet and The Dream Songs, the two works on which his reputation rests, are intricate, introspective, difficult, and compelling, marked by nervous, jagged rhythms and an idiosyncratic use of idioms."

Born in McAlester, Oklahoma, and educated at Columbia University, Berryman gained a national reputation with his long poem Homage to Mistress Bradstreet (1956), which took the form of conversations with the ghost of Anne Bradstreet , the first female poet of the American colonies. For his book of verse, 77 Dream Songs (1964), Berryman received the Pulitzer Prize in poetry in 1965. This work was continued and completed with His Toy, His Dream, His Rest (1968). The poems in these two books were collected in The Dream Songs In his verse Berryman often sought to turn an experience or feeling into “… something that is coherent, directed, intelligible.” His work bears some relation to confessional poetry (
