Pierre Berton: Canadian
He used to say he had 200,000 words a year in him, which he said were enough for either a daily column or another thick Berton book. By the age of 84, he had written 50 books before announcing his retirement. He was a star of Canadian radio and television, a household name, a man who once was quoted as saying a Canadian is "somebody who knows how to make love in a canoe."
COMMENTS E-mail us your thoughts.
"The nation is bound together by its creative artists," Berton wrote in the Globe and Mail in 1999, "and not by parallel lines of rusting steel."
His books, 30-plus literary awards, a dozen honorary degrees, appointment as a companion of the Order of Canada in 1986, and umpteen Canadian television appearances, make him a true national icon.

Dozens of family members wore bow ties in tribute to the fiercely prolific writer, journalist, popular historian, television personality and Canadian icon who died last week at 84.

    Pros
Masterful writing and attention to detail which provides both enjoyment and education.
    Cons
    None
The Bottom Line Niagara: A History of the Falls has all the elements that make it a great book. In short, it will provide sheer enjoyment for years to come. Full Review Most of these extraordinary characters, success or not, fell into the general categories relating to business, science, engineering, daredevils, swindlers, or scandals. The second group of characters where those related to the engineering aspect of various bridge catastrophes. There were many men who had failed, but out of this group rose one of the greatest engineers / builders of all time. This man was John Roebling, who after many-failed attempts to build a suspension bridge across the Niagara Gorge came up with the revolutionary idea of using stiffened trusses to strengthen the bridge. This simply idea of applying a product that already existed to the bridge design might seem rather meaningless, and at the time many felt that it was. Years later though, it would prove to be the standard element in bridge design across the world. And with that, his career was launched to new heights, being best shown with his next project the Brooklyn Bridge. (Berton pg. 63-70)

Q was the nickname of the gadgetmeister in the James Bond series, and he was so wonderfully played for so long by the late Desmond Llewelyn, it seems difficult to admit that John Cleese's character has now been given the title in the series. Well, Q is also the nickname of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, which has been in the news all week, what with a new franchise headed to town. * Quebec Major Junior Hockey League www.lhjmq.qc.ca/lang_en/index.php Businessman Derm Dobbin was the Q's choice for heading up an expansion franchise in St. John's, even though Dobbin has had something of a frosty relationship with the folks who run Mile One Stadium. Whatever happens with lease agreements and whatnot, it's reasonable to expect some league teams to be playing here within a year's time. Get up to speed with all the action much of which is now centered in the very Atlantic Canadian towns where the American Hockey League once dominated. Funny how times change.

Marching As To War: Canada's Turbulent Years
    Pierre Berton
    Manufacturer: Doubleday Canada
    ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover ASIN: Release Date: Book Description The first war of the century, which took Canadian soldiers to South Africa, and the last, which sent them to Korea, bracket the bookends on the shelf of history. They have a good deal in common with, these two minor conflicts, whose chronicles pale when compared to the bloodbaths of the two world wars. Canada's wartime days are long past, and for many, the scars of war have healed. Vimy has been manicured clean, its pockmarked slopes softened by a green mantle of Canadian pines. Dieppe has reverted to a resort town, its beaches long since washed free of Canadian blood. Nowadays, Canadians are proud of their role as Peacekeepers, from which they have gained a modicum of international acclaim the nation has always craved, with precious little blood wasted in the process. In this monumental work, Pierre Berton brings Canadian history to life once again, relying on a host of sources, including newspaper accounts and first-hand reports, to tell the story of these four wars through the eyes of the privates in the trenches, the generals at the front, and the politicians and families back home. By profiling the interwar years, Berton traces how one war led to the next, and how the country was changed in the process. Illustrated with maps and line drawings, Marching as to War describes how the experience of war helped to bind Canada together as a nation and chronicles the transformation of Canada's dependence upon Great Britain and its slow emergence as an independent nation caught in a love-hate relationship with the United States.
