L'opera, composta da oltre settemila versi in rime baciate, racconta lo sfrenato festeggiamento carnevalesco come un grottesco viaggio di matti (peccatori) verso il disastroso naufragio finale, metafora di punizione eterna. Studi² all'Universit  di Basilea, citt  dove poi insegn² diritto ed esercit² la professione legale. La fama di Brant ¨ legata al poema morale e satirico La nave dei folli (1494), che a quell'epoca ebbe vasta diffusione. Il poema racconta di un gruppo di pazzi che, imbarcati alla ricerca del paradiso, alla fine muoiono per le stoltezze commesse. L'opera, che si propone di castigare non soltanto il vizio e la malvagit  ma anche l'imprudenza e la stravaganza, ¨ stata tradotta in varie lingue e ha ispirato il romanzo omonimo di Katherine Anne Porter , pubblicato nel 1962.
