Rupert Brooke (1887 - 1915)
Brooke was an English poet whose neo-Romantic poems and premature death in World War One contributed to his fame and idealised image. Rupert Brooke was born on 3 August 1887. His father was a housemaster at Rugby School. After leaving Cambridge University, where he became friends with many of those in the 'Bloomsbury Group', Brooke studied in Germany and travelled in Italy. In 1909 he moved to the village of Grantchester, near Cambridge, which he celebrated in his poem, 'The Old Vicarage, Grantchester' (1912). His first collection of poems was published in 1911. In 1913 Brooke became a fellow of King's College, Cambridge, his old college. In the same year, he left England to travel in North America, New Zealand and the Pacific islands. He returned home shortly before the outbreak of World War One. He was commissioned into the Royal Naval Division and took part in the disastrous Antwerp expedition in October 1914. In February 1915, he set sail for the Dardanelles. On board ship he developed septicaemia from a mosquito bite. He died on 23 April 1915 on a hospital ship off the Greek island of Skyros and was buried in an olive grove on the island.

Rupert Brooke
Rupert Brooke was born in Rugby, England and was educated at Rugby School, where his father was a housemaster, and at King's College, Cambridge. In 1911 he visited Germany and in 1913 travelled in America, Samoa, and Tahiti following his recovery from a nervous breakdown. On the outbreak of war he joined the Royal Naval Division and was sent to Belgium. In 1915 he was transferred to the Dardanelles but became ill en route and died of blood poisoning at Scyros where he is buried. In many ways a golden boy of his age and a revered symbol of a lost generation, his death was made all the more poignant by its speculative prediction in his famous poem The Soldier , one of his five "war sonnets". Although regarded as one of the three major war poets, he treated a number of other subjects in his tragically shortened career with nostalgia, sensitivity, and simplicity of language. Five sonnets

He was born in Rugby, Warwickshire, the son of a Rugby schoolmaster, and was educated at Rugby School. He became a fellow of King's College, Cambridge in 1913. Brooke made friends among the Bloomsbury group of writers, some of whom admired his talent, while others, both male and female, were more impressed by his good looks. The poet W. B. Yeats described him as "the handsomest young man in England". Brooke belonged to another literary group known as the Georgian Poets, and was the most important of the Dymock poets, associated with the Gloucestershire village of Dymock, where he spent some time before the war.
Brooke toured the United States and Canada to write travel diaries for the Westminster Gazette and visited several islands in the South Seas. It was later revealed that he had fathered a daughter with a Tahitian woman. He was also romantically involved with the actress, Cathleen Nesbitt.
His accomplished poetry gained many enthusiasts and followers and he was taken up by Edward Marsh, who brought him to the attention of Winston Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty. He entered the army as an officer, as befitted his social class, and took part in the Antwerp expedition in October 1914. He sailed with the British Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on February 28, 1915 but became ill from an infected insect bite. He died on April 23, 1915 off the island on Lemnos in the Aegean on his way to a battle at Gallipoli. His grave is on the island of Skyros, Greece.

That there's some corner of a foreign field
The is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home. And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day; And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness, In hearts at peace, under and English heaven.
