Z John Bunyan Biography John Bunyan (November 30, 1628 - August 31, 1688), a Christian writer and preacher, was born at Harrowden (1 mile south-east of Bedford), in the Parish of Elstow, England. He wrote The Pilgrim's Progress, arguably the most famous published Christian allegory.
    Life
Bunyan had very little schooling, followed his father in the tinker's trade, served in the parliamentary army (1644 - 1647); married in 1649; lived in Elstow till 1655 (when his wife died) and then moved to Bedford. He married again in 1659. He was received into the Baptist church in Bedford by immersion in the Ouse in 1653.
In 1655 he became a deacon and began preaching, with marked success from the start. In 1658 he was indicted for preaching without a license; kept on, however, and did not suffer imprisonment till November 1660, when he was taken to the county jail in Silver Street, Bedford, and there confined (with the exception of a few weeks in 1666) till January 1672, when Charles II issued the Declaration of Religious Indulgence.
In that month he became pastor of the Bedford church. In March 1675 (the original warrant, discovered in 1887, is published in facsimile by Rush and Warwick, London), he was again imprisoned for preaching (because Charles II withdrew the Declaration of Religious Indulgence), this time in the Bedford town jail on the stone bridge over the Ouse. In six months he was free and was not again molested as a result of his popularity.

Psalm 102:1-10 Psalm 101 Psalm 100 The 'On This Day' Department is under reconstruction! His father was able to send him to the village school, where he was taught reading and writing. When he was about 17, he joined the Parliamentary army (1644-47), in the Civil War, and served during the decisive campaign of 1645. At the siege of some small town, one of his fellow soldiers that had marched in his place, was shot and died. Bunyan ever after considered himself as being saved from death by the special interference of Providence. Two years after he returned from the war, he married Mary. His new wife was raised by God-fearing parents, and so she brought two books into their new home. As John read them, and overheard the conversation of some other poor women, while he worked, he realized he knew nothing of spiritual living. He got saved and baptized around 1653. His wife died three years later, leaving four children: Mary, Elizabeth, John, and Thomas.

In 1655 Bunyan became one of the leaders of a congregation of Nonconformists in Bedford, giving sermons as a lay preacher. After his wife died, Bunyan remarried and became a popular preacher, speaking to large audiences. However, after the restoration of Charles II in 1660, Puritans lost the privilege of freedom of worship, and it was declared illegal to conduct divine service except in accordance with the forms of the Church of England. Bunyan, who persisted in his unlicensed preaching, was confined to Bedford county jail from 1660 to 1672, although during a part of this time he was allowed a degree of freedom and was able to support his family by making shoelaces.
