He was born in Quito and is considered the greatest Ecuadorian writer and one of the foremost Spanish-language poets of the 20th century. He held diplomatic posts in Europe, South America, and Japan and served as Ecuadorian minister of foreign affairs. His travels had a marked influence on his poetry, which abounds in place-names and descriptions. Although some of his poems reflect his identification with social revolution, most of his poetry consists of metaphorical descriptions of places and objects and is noted for its sensitive, original imagery. Among Carrera's works are Secret Country (1922; trans. 1946)

Carrera Andrade is credited with being instrumental in adapting the style of Japanese haiku poetry to the Spanish language. Among Carrera’s works are Estanque Inefable Secret Country Rol de la manzana (Catalogue of the Apple, 1935), La hora de las ventanas iluminadas (Hour of the Lighted Windows, 1937)

Jorge Carrera Andrade naquit   Quito et fut diplomate en Europe (consul au Havre de 1934   1938), en Am©rique du Sud et au Japon, puis ministre des Affaires ©trang¨res de l'‰quateur. Esprit cultiv© et cosmopolite, amateur des lettres fran§aises, il est l'auteur de po¨mes marqu©s par une inspiration locale, qui traitent de la culture menac©e des Indiens du continent sud-am©ricain, mais qui n'en sont pas moins r©solument modernes et d'une port©e universelle. Il s'inspira beaucoup de ses voyages pour ©crire ses œuvres, o¹ abondent la toponymie et les descriptions de paysages. Certains de ses textes refl¨tent ©galement son engagement dans la r©volution sociale, mais la majorit© d'entre eux, caract©ris©s par des images violentes et br¨ves, originales et brillantes — sans doute influenc©es par Andr© Breton et le surr©alisme —  offrent des descriptions m©taphoriques de lieux et d'objets.
