The Story of an Hour

from Miette's Bedtime Story Podcast on March 24, 2005
51 views It was only a matter of time before we get here, deep unsettling irony, psychosexual abandonment, romantic antipathy and just a soupcon of background traffic. A passing bus, a ghetto lowrider, a few dollups of plaster falling from the ceiling, and if you listen very intently, introspection. Nice and short, this, so much so that I m tempted to carry on writing this podCASTpost while you listen, so that your eyes might finish reading while your ears are done listening, so that I can spoil the ending here without regret. But I wouldn t do that. Not to you. also in: education arts literature kate ... chopin

Celebrated for her depictions of life among Louisiana's Creole and Cajun peoples, Kate Chopin (1850-1904) is today seen as a major figure in southern literature. Her short stories and her last novel, The Awakening (1899), are widely read and studied. Unjustly neglected, however, is her first novel, At Fault, which Chopin published in 1890 at her own expense. This edition of At Fault the first printing to appear since Chopin's Complete Works was issued in 1969 now makes the book available to a wide audience. The novel centers on Therese Lafirme, a widow who owns and runs a plantation in post-Civil War Louisiana. She encounters David Hosmer, who buys timber rights to her property to secure raw materials for his newly constructed sawmill. When David remarries, a love triangle develops between David, Fanny (his alcoholic wife), and Therese, who tries to balance her strong moral sensibility against her growing love for David. In depicting these relationships, Chopin acutely dramatizes the conflict between growing industrialism and the agrarian traditions of the Old South as well as the changes to the land and the society that inevitably resulted from that conflict.

Chopin, Kate
In 1889, Kate Chopin, 39-year-old widow and mother of 6 children, began her writing career. She turned to writing at this late age partly, it is believed, to alleviate her unhappiness after losing both her husband and her mother, and partly as a way to support her family. She quickly gained a reputation for herself and her stories and first novel were very well received by the critics and the public. But in 1899 The Awakening was published and things changed. The book was judged not on its literary merits but on its subject matter: a woman's challenge of the social and sexual conventions of society. It was deemed highly inappropriate and Chopin was harshly condemned. Luckily, with the passage of time, that judgement was overturned as interest in the book was renewed and it is now hailed as a classic of American literature. Chopin was born Katherine O'Flaherty in 1850 in St Louis, Missouri. Her father was an Irish immigrant and businessman and her mother was from a wealthy French Creole family. After her father died when she was 5, Kate was raised by her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, all three of them widows. Kate grew into a lively and independent woman, probably due in part to this wealth of strong female role models, and remained so after she married Oscar Chopin at age 19 in 1870. After a honeymoon in Europe, the couple lived in New Orleans, spending their summers in Grand Isle on the Gulf of Mexico. Kate had 6 children and by most accounts was happy in her marriage to Oscar.

By Kate Chopin One morning on his way into town Mr. Pontellier stopped at the house of his old friend and family physician, Doctor Mandelet. The Doctor was a semi-retired physician, resting, as the saying is, upon his laurels. He bore a reputation for wisdom rather than skillleaving the active practice of medicine to his assistants and younger contemporariesand was much sought for in matters of consultation. A few families, united to him by bonds of friendship, he still attended when they required the services of a physician. The Pontelliers were among these. Mr. Pontellier found the Doctor reading at the open window of his study. His house stood rather far back from the street, in the center of a delightful garden, so that it was quiet and peaceful at the old gentleman's study window. He was a great reader. He stared up disapprovingly over his eye-glasses as Mr. Pontellier entered, wondering who had the temerity to disturb him at that hour of the morning. "Ah, Pontellier! Not sick, I hope. Come and have a seat. What news do you bring this morning?" He was quite portly, with a profusion of gray hair, and small blue eyes which age had robbed of much of their brightness but none of their penetration.

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Kate Chopin (1850-1904), American writer, known for her depictions of culture in New Orleans, Louisiana, and of women's struggles for freedom. Chopin was born Katherine O'Flaherty in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1870 she married Oscar Chopin, a Creole cotton trader, and moved with him to New Orleans. After a business failure, the family moved to a plantation near Cloutierville, Louisiana, where her husband died in 1882. In 1884 Chopin returned to St. Louis with her six children. There she maintained a literary salon and began her writing career. For more than a decade following her first published story in 1889, Chopin depicted the manners, customs, speech, and surroundings of Louisiana's Creole and Cajun residents. Two collections of her short fiction were published in the 1890s: Bayou Folk (1894) and A Night in Acadie (1897). Both works were well-received as examples of “local-color” literature and helped establish Chopin's reputation as a major contributor to Southern regional literature. Chopin also produced a substantial body of poetry, reviews, and criticism. As her later stories, such as “The Story of an Hour,” began to emphasize women's need for independence and capacity for passion, editors became less receptive to her work.
