Clark Fuller Martin A more complete version of Clark’s biography will be added in the near future. Please check back. Clark Fuller Martin, youngest of the four children of Horatio Woodman Martin and Laura M. Hart and the very youngest of all the grandchildren of Nathaniel Martin and Hannah Strader, was born 13 June 1900 in Martintown, Green County, WI. He was raised there, attending Martin Elementary School just across the Pecatonica River from his home, and then going to high school a mile or two to the south in Winslow, Stephenson County, IL. Before Clark turned six years old, his father died of tuberculosis. Upon his mother’s marriage the following year to Elwood Bucher who was already Clark’s uncle due to an earlier marriage to Mary Lincoln Martin Clark became part of a household composed not only of his own siblings, but also his step-brother Ralph Bucher, who was simultaneously his first cousin. Clark had four other Bucher cousins/step-siblings Claude, Arley, Rose, and Blanche but they were grown and living independent lives by the time Elwood and Laura became spouses. In his teens, Clark and Ralph were both employed at the Martintown mills their grandfather had founded, which were located only a stone’s throw from the house in which Clark had been born. By this point Elwood Bucher had expanded the scope of the legacy business to include the generation of electricity, using the force of the water wheels that had ground flour and cut lumber for many decades to serve a power plant. Surviving documents point to both teenagers being involved with the maintenance and operation of the power plant.
