Sidonie Gabrielle Claudine Colette, Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette Colette married Henri Gauthier-Villars, a writer and critic, in 1920. He published her first novels, the Claudine series, under his own pen name. After they divorced, Colette began performing in music halls as a dancer and mime, and produced another book. This was followed with more books, usually semi-autobiographical with a narrator named Colette, and many scandals, as she established her writing career. Colette was married twice more: Henri de Jouvenal (1912-1925) and Maurice Goudeket (1935-1954). Colette received the French Legion of Honor (Légion d'Honneur) in 1953.

    Colette (Sidonie-Gabrielle) 1873-1954
Colette was born in the village of Saint-Saveur-en Puisaye, Burgundy. Considered one of France’s leading twentieth-century novelists, she was elected to the prestigious Academie Goncourt and Academie Royal Belge. Recognized for her warm, subjective style and the lyrical beauty of her prose as well as her prolific output, she produced over fifty books, numerous short stories and articles for some of the leading newspapers and periodicals of her era. Critics generally divide her work into four phases: the Claudine novels, life in the theater, the politics of love, and reminiscences of youth and family. Dominant themes concern the difficulty of reconciling a woman’s struggle for independence and self-realization with the insistent demands of physical passion and the inevitable requirements of adult relationships. Although Colette considered The Pure and the Impure (1932) to be her finest work, many critics believe the best representations of her craft are found in The Vagabond (1910), Cheri (1920), The Last of Cheri (1926), My Mother's House (1922)

  • Cheri
". . . endears itself to the reader partly because of its subject, but more because of the manner of its telling. Its delicacy of sentiment, its tenderness of mood when concerned with matter not usually delicate or tender, makes the reader forget that Mme. Colette is writing of a gigolo and a courtesan . . . "

  • The Gentle Libertine
". . . deserves to be called the most mature, the most delicate and the wittiest book yet written by Colette, that very delicate and witty novelist."
  • Renee La Vagabonde
". . . [a] thoroughly 'trivial' book, in the better sense of the word, and it will be liked only by those who enjoy trivialities when they are accompanied by great charm and grace of expression."

Life...in the really, really fast lane...
    *sighs*
Too much stuff to do, not enough time. Too much love to give, too little time (it seems) to share....
I am not trying to complain (really, I'm not). I just want more time - or need to manage it better, or need to stop feeling so very overwhelmed.
I still have to finish stuff for the wedding. This is a must do and a very timely thing.
I have a possible huge Yoga opportunity looming and I am not sure how to approach this - I'd love to just quit my job and do Yoga - but I am not sure I can do that and ever hope to get ahead or retire...but then what the fuck do I 'really' care about money? (That's just it I don't)....
Things with Erin's son are well...not going well - but it's also going to be OK as long as we keep on him, as long as we can show him how much we are in his corner.

Day 1. Get sick - it's 50 degrees, windy, wet and freezing here.
find the nearest drug store, but Clariton D - got to bed and pray for sunshine
Day 2. 81 degrees, windy, wet and warm - drugs worked drive around see the sites
Day 3. Wake up - pouring rain - windy and cold again. Decide to drive around and hope it clears
12 noon - the sun is shining - still windy, but warm!
We have been in Dallas 3 days now and the weather has been most uncooperative, though today it finally cleared up and we were able to walk around and see some sights. We went to the Sixth Floor Museum in the old Dallas Book Depository - and took pictures of Dealey Plaza, went to the Fairgrounds, but the Train Museum was closed. Found a bead shop and bought pale green beads for the mohair shetland triangle and are planning to go to the Galleria later.
    Some pictures of Dallas:

Tomorrow we head to Austin, which is what I am looking forward to. There are a number of yarn shops, stores, restaurants and bars I want to visit while we are there!

    Colette (1873-1954)
page: Colette is one of France's most beloved authors, a "national treasure," as one French reader has put it. This admiration is reserved for the Colette who in some sixty-odd books wrote magnificently and frankly about woman's condition. It does not generally extend to the Colette whose name invariably appears whenever lists of famous gay and lesbian authors are compiled. Colette's six-year liaison with the Marquise de Belboeuf, known as Missy, is dismissed as a phase, and her other lesbian relationships are almost never mentioned in the admiring accounts of her life. Sponsor Message.
The Pure and the Impure (1932, rev. 1941), which contains Colette's most explicit and extended writing on homosexuality, continues to baffle those who actually read it, and the strong lesbian subtext found throughout her oeuvre remains all but invisible even today.
