Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It William Collins (1721-59), English poet, one of the finest lyric poets of his age. He was born in Chichester and educated at the University of Oxford. While at Oxford he published a volume of verse, Persian Eclogues (1742). Later, living in London on a small bequest, he published (1746) a volume of odes, but his health began to fail about 1749. He continued to write, without popular success, but winning the acclaim of the critic Samuel Johnson and the poets Oliver Goldsmith and Thomas Gray. Of Collins's relatively few poems, such pieces as “How Sleep the Brave,””Ode to Evening,””Ode to Simplicity,””The Passions” (all pub. between 1746 and 1750), and “Ode on the Popular Superstitions of the Highlands of Scotland” (1750) are outstanding. Obits Obits Home Courtesy of Turpin Funeral Home Online Obituaries Mr. William Collins Born: Died: Visitation: Private Funeral Service: 1:00 Friday August 20, 2004 at the Richmond Cemetery Interment: Richmond Cemetery William Joseph (Joe) Collins, 89, died Monday, August 16, 2004 at Bourbon Community Hospital. The son of the late M. A. and Mary Frances Hisle Collins, he was born in Madison Co., Ky. May 20, 1915. He was raised on Waverly Farm near Richmond and formerly resided in Versailles and San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Collins is survived by four children and their spouses, Margaret Brown Collins Altom and her husband Wayne of Winchester; Jo Anne Lorensen and her husband Len of Ashville, North Carolina; Lisa Phelps Collins and her husband Curtis E. Jones of Lexington; and Thomas Noland Collins and his wife Dr. Anna E. Newman of Paris. He is also survived by his beloved partner, Geneva Connally of San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Collins is also survived by six grandchildren, Danny Wayne Altom of Covington, Valerie VanBooven of St. Louis, Margaret Frances Altom of Winchester, Ira Collins Duncan of Lexington, Hannah P. Collins of Ladson, South Carolina, and Sadie Rose Collins of Paris. A 1933 graduate of Model High School in Richmond, Mr. Collins also attended Eastern Kentucky State Teacher’s College. During World War II he served for three years as a civil engineer on the construction of the Alcan Highway in Alaska and subsequently worked for many years as a stone mason. He was an avid outdoorsman.

RAMINGHAM William J. "Brother" Collins, 82, a lifelong resident of Framingham, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, at MetroWest Medical Center in Natick. He was the husband of Irene M. (Liberatore) Collins. They were married for 43 years Born and raised in Framingham, he was the son of the late Timothy J. and Elizabeth (Ward) Collins. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Medical Detachment of the 263rd Infantry Regiment. He worked as a firefighter for the Town of Framingham from 1957 until his retirement in 1987. Following his retirement, he volunteered at the Columbus Hall and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 894, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 1264, and the Knights of Columbus Couer de Lion Council 87, all of Framingham. Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, Timothy Collins, and his grandchildren, Courtney and Kyle Collins, all of Framingham; and his brother, Francis Collins and his wife, Margaret Collins, of Needham.

Collins, William Collins, William (1721-1759), po¨te britannique, au talent lyrique parmi les plus raffin©s de son temps. N©   Chichester, il fit ses ©tudes   l'universit© d'Oxford. C'est alors qu'il publia un recueil de vers, ‰glogues persanes, en 1744. Plus tard, vivant   Londres des modestes rentes que lui procurait un h©ritage, il fit para®tre, en 1746, un volume d'odes, mais sa sant© mentale et physique se d©grada d¨s 1749. Il continua d'©crire, sans gagner l'adh©sion du public, mais suscita la vive admiration du critique Samuel Johnson et des po¨tes Oliver Goldsmith et Thomas Gray. Il mourut, en proie   la folie,   l'¢ge de trente-huit ans. Des rares po¨mes de Collins, certains, comme « How Sleep the Brave », « Ode to Evening », « Ode to Simplicity », « The Passions » (tous publi©s entre 1746 et 1750) et « Ode on the Popular Superstitions of the Highlands of Scotland » (1750), sont remarquables.
