    William Cowper
William Cowper (pronounced Couper) was born at Great Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, the son of a vicar, and was educated at Westminster School. He studied at the Inner Temple and was called to the bar in 1754, but never practised. During his twenties he suffered severly from depression and on one occasion attempted suicide. In 1765 he went to live with a retired clergyman, Morley Unwin, and his family in Huntingdon, and following the latter's death two years later, moved with his widow, Mary, and children to Olney in Buckinghamshire. Afflicted by mental illness for most of his life, Cowper collapsed completely after her death in 1794. Influenced by the Calvinist pastor John Newton, Cowper wrote a number of well-known hymns but his best work was produced in his later years when he wrote John Gilpin The Solitude of Alexander Selkirk Boadicea The Poplar Field On the Loss of the Royal George and the sonnet, To Mrs. Unwin . His final poem, The Castaway , was written shortly before his death. Cowper wrote with simplicity and humanity and his poetry contains some beautiful imagery. To Mary Unwin

Cowper, William Cowper, William (1731-1800), English poet, who wrote about the simple pleasures of country life and expressed a deep concern with human cruelty and suffering. He was born in Great Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire. He suffered periods of acute depression. Upon his release from an asylum, he lived with the evangelical cleric Morley Unwin and his wife, Mary, in Huntingdon. In 1767 Unwin died and Cowper moved to Buckinghamshire with Mary and her children. In 1773 he was again seized by a severe despondency, rooted in religious doubts and fears that plagued him all his life, but the care of Mary Unwin, who encouraged him to compose poetry, helped him to recover. He collaborated with the curate John Newton in writing Olney Hymns (1779). In 1782 he published Poems, a series of eight satires. Cowper is best known for the humorous ballad “The Diverting History of John Gilpin” (1783) and the poem praising rural life, The Task (1785), written in a conversational style of blank verse. Though he and Mary Unwin were engaged, they never married but remained together and moved in 1786 to Weston Underwood where Cowper composed a number of short poems, “The Poplar Field”, “On the Loss of the Royal George”, and “To Mrs. Unwin”, all published posthumously. After the death of Mrs Unwin, he never recovered his mental or physical health, and in his last years he wrote “The Castaway” (1779), an expression of his spiritual torment. His work marks the point at which English poetry moved away from the concerns of Neo-Classicism towards those of Romanticism.
