Among his most popular books are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Kiss Kiss.
    Biography
Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff, Glamorgan in 1916 to Norwegian parents. He was educated at Repton School. After finishing his schooling, he joined the Shell Oil Company, and was transferred to South Africa. In World War II, he joined the Royal Air Force. Although severely wounded in Libya, he later saw service in Greece and Syria. He ended the war as a Wing Commander.
He began writing when in 1942 he was transferred to Washington as Assistant Air Attache. His first published short story was A Piece of Cake, describing his accident in Libya (when his aircraft crashed over no-man's-land).
He was married to Hollywood actress Patricia Neal (The Day the Earth Stood Still, Hud) from 1953 to 1983. They had five children.
He died at home in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire and is buried in the St Peter and St Paul Cemetery there. In his honour, the Roald Dahl Children's Museum was opened in nearby Aylesbury.

    Articles About Dahl, Roald
Roald Dahl: A Norwegian Lifestyle May 28, 2007 A world renown best-selling children's author of books such as James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, BFG and Matilda, Roald Dahl dominated the children's literary field in his day. Think of Dahl as a modern-day J.K Rowling, yet he was heavily influenced by his Norwegian upbringing. His mother frequently told Dahl and his siblings stories of Nordic folklore, especially of tiny trolls and mythical creatures which could be found in a lush, Norwegian forest.

Adult Works After the war, Dahl returned to England and pursued a career as a writer. He sold short stories to magazines and radio stations, and published the unsuccessful Sometime Never (1948), a fantasy novel dealing with global nuclear war and its aftermath. His only other novel, My Uncle Oswald (1979), whose story told of a plot to gain and then sell the sperm of the world’s most powerful and intelligent men, did not prove to be popular. More successful was his first book of short fiction for adults, Over to You (1946), a collection of most of his wartime stories. This was followed by Someone Like You (1953) and Kiss, Kiss Another collection, Switch Bitch (1974), continued Dahl’s tradition of morbid, eerie tales for adults. Dahl also wrote two film scripts, You Only Live Twice (1967), and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), both adapted from Ian Fleming novels. He achieved his greatest fame by writing for children, giving himself the financial security he had long sought. "Dahl, Roald," Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2007

ROALD DAHL'S BOOK OF GHOST STORIES
Roald Dahl Who better to investigate the literary spirit world than that supreme connoisseur of the unexpected, Roald Dahl? Of the many permutations of the macabre or bizarre, Dahl was always especially fascinated by the classic ghost story. As he realtes in the erudite introduction to this volume, he read some 749 supernatural tales at the British Museum Library before selecting the 14 that comprise this anthology. "Spookiness is, after all, the real purpose of the ghost story," Dahl writes. "It should give you the creeps and disturb your thoughts." For this superbly disquieting collection, Dahl offers favorite tales by such masterful storytellers as E. F. Benson, J. Sheridan Le Fanu, Rosemary Timperley, and Edith Wharton. Roald Dahl 1916 - 1990 Return to... Roald Dahl was born on September 13, 1916 in Wales, the son of Norwegian immigrants. His colorful experiences as a student in English boarding schools were the inspiration for his books Boy and Danny, Champion of the World Dahl became a writer during World War II, when he recounted in a short story his adventures as a fighter pilot for the Royal Air Force. The story was bought by The Saturday Evening Post and a long, illustrious career was born. After establishing himself as a writer for adults, Dahl began writing children's stories in 1960 while living in England with his family. His first two novels, James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , are now considered classics and both have been made into blockbuster films. He was the winner of England's two most distinguished literary awards, the Whitbread Prize and the Children's Book Award, and seventeen of his works are perennial bestsellers. Throughout his life, Dahl took great joy in hearing from his readers. He loved nothing more than to know he was entertaining them, as well as instilling in them a love of reading and books. Dahl once said, "I know what children like." His stories are proof positive that he was right. Roald Dahl passed away on November 23, 1990.
