The Personal Was Political By ROBERT PINSKY Dante Alighieri, sometimes described as Shakespeare's one great equal, chose to make himself his protagonist, in his ''Vita Nuova'' and ''Convivio'' as well as in his culminating masterwork, the ''Commedia.'' Dante was a polemicist, a city official, a diplomatic negotiator and a political exile, sentenced to death in his absence. He wrote explicitly and extensively about politics, philosophy, science and especially literature, including commentary on his own work. July 29, 2001 Arts Review Working Their Way to the Top By DANIEL MENDELSOHN Each section of the ''Commedia,'' which tracks Dante's wide-eyed tour through the three realms of the afterlife hell, purgatory and paradise provides thoughtful, morally rigorous investigations of sin, guilt and redemption; each section is deeply emotional yet intellectually subtle; and each bears witness to dazzling imaginative and artistic resources. Dante and the Modern Imagination tellio
"For good and ill, we have become accustomed to thinking in images almost more than in words."
A guess as to why Dante appeals to the modern imagination. Here's another guess:
"But after the Battle of the Somme, the Holocaust, and Hiroshima, it is only too easy to see Dante's world as reflection of our own. Once again, there is an ironic counterpoint between the 13th century and the 21st. Dante could imagine vivid bodily tortures because he believed completely in the soul; our world inflicts those tortures because it doesn't believe in the soul at all."
Intriguing thought, we love Dante because we have no soul. Like the sinners waiting to cross the River with Charon: we wish our horrible fate because we know we deserve it. Yes, No, meh?

Nature craves love, and then creates love king, and makes the heart a palace where he’ll stay, perhaps a shorter or a longer day, breathing quietly, gently slumbering. Then beauty in a virtuous woman’s face makes the eyes yearn, and strikes the heart, so that the eyes’ desire’s reborn again, and often, rooting there with longing, stays, Till love, at last, out of its dreaming starts. Woman’s moved likewise by a virtuous man. Email This Poem to a Friend Previous Poem Next Poem View Dante Alighieri: Poems Quotes Biography Books ... Dante Alighieri (originally Durante) was Italy’s greatest poet and one of the most venerated authors of Western Civilization. Dante was born on 1 June 1265 in Florence and his immortal and vastly popular “Divina Commedia” – “Divine Comedy” is credited with standardizing the modern Italian language. In addition to authoring brilliant works such as "Inferno", the "Purgatario", the "Paradiso and “La Vita Nuova” – “The New Life”, he also served as a soldier, doctor, pharmacist and political strategist. A few famous Dante lines: “Follow your own star.” “He listens well who takes notes.” “Remember tonight for it is the beginning of always.” “The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who in times of great moral crises maintain their neutrality.” The famous poet died in Ravenna on 14 September 1321. The Poet Who Saw the Inferno and Invented Love
Bret T. Norwood Dec 2, 2007
A brief biography of Dante, author of the Divine Comedy and best-known writer of the High Middle Ages.
Dante Alighieri was a Florentine writer, poet, and political figure best known for his Divine Comedy and its three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso . He was a leader in the dolce stil nuovo literary movement, identified by use of the vernacular Tuscan dialect (rather than Latin) and by the topic of Divine Love.
Dante Alighieri: The Man
Dante was born into minor nobility in 1265 in the city of Florence. His mother Gabriella died when he was a child, and his father passed away when he was around eighteen. Nothing is recorded about his education. At the age of nine he first saw the girl named Beatrice Portinari who would inspire his major works

[Dante Alighieri : Quotes] talian poet, born at Florence, 1265; died at Ravenna, Italy, 14 September, 1321. His own statement in the "Paradiso" (xxii, 112-117) that he was born when the sun was in Gemini, fixes his birthday between 18 May and 17 June.
Already Dante had written his first book, the "Vita Nuova", or "New Life", an exquisite medley of lyrical verse and poetic prose, telling the story of his love for Beatrice, whom he had first seen at the end of his ninth year. Beatrice, who was probably the daughter of Folco Portinari, and wife of Simone de' Bardi, died in June, 1290, and the "Vita Nuova" was completed about the year 1294. Dante's love for her was purely spiritual and mystical, the amor amicitiae defined by St. Thomas Aquinas: "That which is loved in love of friendship is loved simply and for its own sake". Its resemblance to the chivalrous worship that the troubadours offered to married women is merely superficial. The book is dedicated to the Florentine poet, Guido Cavalcanti, whom Dante calls "the first of my friends", and ends with the promise of writing concerning Beatrice "what has never before been written of any woman".
The "Purgatorio", perhaps the most artistically perfect of the three canticles, owes less to the beauty of the separate episodes. Dante's conception of purgatory as a lofty mountain, rising out of the ocean in the southern hemisphere, and leading up to the Garden of Eden, the necessary preparation for winning back the earthly paradise, and with it all the prerogatives lost by man at the fall of Adam, seems peculiar to him; nor do we find elsewhere the purifying process carried on beneath the sun and stars, with the beauty of transfigured nature only eclipsed by the splendour of the angelic custodians of the seven terraces. The meeting with Beatrice on the banks of Lethe, with Dante's personal confession of an unworthy past, completes the story of the "Vita Nuova" after the bitter experiences and disillusions of a lifetime.
