Charles Robert Darwin was born on 12 February 1809 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire into a wealthy and well-connected family. His maternal grandfather was china manufacturer Josiah Wedgwood, while his paternal grandfather was Erasmus Darwin, one of the leading intellectuals of 18th century England. Darwin himself initially planned to follow a medical career, and studied at Edinburgh University but later switched to divinity at Cambridge. In 1831, he joined a five year scientific expedition on the survey ship HMS Beagle. At this time, most Europeans believed that the world was created by God in seven days as described in the bible. On the voyage, Darwin read Lyell's 'Principles of Geology' which suggested that the fossils found in rocks were actually evidence of animals that had lived many thousands or millions of years ago. Lyell's argument was reinforced in Darwin's own mind by the rich variety of animal life and the geological features he saw during his voyage. The breakthrough in his ideas came in the Galapagos Islands, 500 miles west of South America. Darwin noticed that each island supported its own form of finch which were closely related but differed in important ways.

Charles Darwin Charles Darwin, a naturalist, developed the theory of natural selection . He was born in Shrewsbury, England on Feb. 12, 1809. His father was also a naturalist and a physician. His mother died when he was eight. Darwin was the first of the evolutionary biologists . At age sixteen, Darwin left Shrewsbury to study medicine at University of Edinbourgh . However, he could not continue in the studies because the sight of surgery performed without anesthesia repelled him. Eventually, Darwin attended Cambridge University to study to become a clergyman. After he graduated, he went on a five-year scientific expedition to the Pacific Coast of South America on the H.M.S. Beagle from 1831 - 1836. On the Origin of Species was published in 1859 describing evolution and natural selection and giving a theoretical explanation for the diversity among living and fossil beings. His book was not well received among the general population who felt threatened at the notion that humans were descended from ape-like creatures. (February 12, 1809 - April 19, 1882) was a revolutionary English naturalist who laid the foundation for both the modern theory of evolution and the principle of common descent by proposing natural selection as a mechanism. He published this proposal in 1859 in the book The Origin of Species, which remains his most famous work. A worldwide sea voyage aboard the H.M.S. Beagle and observations on the Galapagos Islands in particular provided inspiration and much of the data on which he based his theory. Early life A seven-year old Charles Darwin in 1816 Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, the fifth of six children of Robert and Susannah Darwin (née Wedgwood), and the grandson of Erasmus Darwin, and of Josiah Wedgwood. After finishing school, Darwin studied medicine in Edinburgh in 1825. His dislike for dissection and the brutality of surgery at the time led him to leave the medical school in 1827. Whilst there, however, he was influenced by the Lamarckian Robert Edmund Grant. His father, unhappy that his younger son had not become a physician and fearing that he would become a "ne'er do well", enrolled him at Christ's College, Cambridge, with the hopes of Charles' eventually becoming a parson. While at Cambridge, he came under the intellectual influence of scientific minds such as William Whewell and John Stevens Henslow which (combined with his interest in collecting beetles, which was encouraged by his cousin, William Darwin Fox) resulted in him pursuing natural history.

Z Darwin Charles 1882 ) Category ( Scientists suggest a correction Born in Shrewsbury, England, Charles Darwin was the fifth child of Robert Darwin and Susannah Wedgewood. Being the child of a wealthy doctor and socialite mother, Darwin attended boarding school at Anglican Shrewsbury School beginning in 1818. During the summer of 1825, Darwin helped his father as an apprentice doctor where he followed him into the poverty stricken area in Shropshire. He then went to Scotland to attend The University of Edinburgh where he planned to study medicine until he decided that surgery was far too brutal. During this time, he learned taxidermy from John Edmonstone who was a recently freed slave and later, his manuscript The Descent of Man would be based on much of what he thought he learned during his time with Edmonstone. Darwin boarded the H.M.S. Beagle in 1831 and served there until 1836 as a naturalist. It was a science exhibition and exploration of the world. It was on this exhibition that Darwin collected plants and species that he would later use to create his own theories. When Charles Darwin returned to London, he began piecing together everything he had collected and came up with four main principles to a theory that he felt was well documented with supporting evidence. This included his belief that evolution did occur though it was gradual and through a process known as natural selection. Still, it did occur through the process of speciation.
