As articulated by Noam Chomsky, these theories generally agree that the ability to learn and use language is innate and specific to humans; they mostly sidestep the issue of how this ability came to be, preferring to treat it as a given of the human mind. That's a tall order, and, although their book advances some controversial ideas about the relative importance of social intelligence in language formation, Calvin and Bickerton make a fine and comprehensible effort in its pages. Give Society Good Breeding
Is it possible to expedite progress? Is there anything any of us can do to improve the health, wealth and happiness of society as a whole? On a person-to-person level, it’s obvious that a doctor can improve a patient, and a parent can improve a child. But, even at the level of the seemingly obvious, can we be sure we’re helping a man by giving him a fish if we fail to also teach him how to fish?
We know that humans can play a role in the evolution of animals. It’s called breeding. More recently we also have genetic engineering as a tool. The question remains whether we can play a positive role in the evolution of society. When Charles Darwin spoke of “survival of the fittest,” he was not thinking of the smartest nor the handsomest, much less the most Aryan-like. No, Chuck had in mind animals such as cockroaches and reptiles. His emphasis was on the “survival.” Cockroaches and reptiles have a history. Boy do they have a history! It is because of their history that the prospects of their future survival seem rosy indeed. By comparison, humanity is a shooting star: A bright streak, granted, but one that could go dark as quickly. The pattern of evolution of animals is similar to the evolution of human society, even if the time cycles differ so greatly. The overwhelming majority of the “biomass” of human society is the equivalent of cockroaches and reptiles that are our institutions and establishments, and belief systems. These have a history of survival, but are anything but elegant and intelligent. Just a couple of (minor?) examples are the military-industrial complex (which was around long before Eisenhower coined the phrase), and what we euphemistically call our criminal justice system.

    3 good parties this weekend
First off - lets end 2006 with a some good things before we really go off in 2007. This Friday (December 29th) there are two great parties that i can suggest ya. At Registratur we have (after the Dj Premier Apocalypse last time) the final Rewind night showcasing the year 1995 Rewind will then take a step back and return in March 2007 @ YUM YUMs 2nd area. More Rewind info available on their blog. The other good party this Friday is the second installment of MFG (deutscher Hip Hop) at Ampere . A pure german-speaking night with all native-lingo tunes and tons of german hiphop and crowd faves . Should be a hell of a dance like the very first time. Defnitely worth checking!!!

Bon app©tit!
Posted April 22, 2007 Comments(0) “The feeling of awed wonder that science can give us is one of the highest experiences of which the human psyche is capable. It is a deep aesthetic passion to rank with the finest that music and poetry can deliver. It is truly one of the things that make life worth living and it does so, if anything, more effectively if it convinces us that the time we have for living it is finite.” I’m convinced that we are hard wired to worship. Every Human being is compelled to worship, In fact the compulsion to worship is; among other traits, a defining characteristic of humanity. Apes, Dolphins, cows and amoeba do not worship, as far as we can tell. The two quotes above are from Dawkins, who exclusively mentions an ‘appetite for wonder’ but doesn’t explain why that appetite exists, what it provides –what competitive advantage did the ancient appetite for wonder provide those who initially mutated a sense of wonder, why does it persist?
